Bužim is a place and the associated community in the north-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It belongs to the Una-Sana canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina . The municipality emerged on February 20, 1995 from the northern part of the municipality of Bosanska Krupa .
geography
The Bužim commune is located in the Bužimnica river valley in the historical Bosanska Krajina region . The terrain is characterized by wooded low mountain ranges that rise up to 630 m (Mount Radoc ). The canton capital Bihać is about 30 km away.
The municipality is bordered by Velika Kladuša in the north, Croatia in the east, Bosanska Krupa in the southeast and Cazin in the southwest. The municipality is the smallest in the canton in terms of area.
population
At the 1991 census, today's community had 16,940 inhabitants. 16,680 of these identified themselves as Bosniaks (98.47%).
At that time, 5490 people lived in Bužim itself. Here, too, the Bosniaks made up the absolute majority with 5409 residents (98.52%). There were no significant other population groups in any of the 6 local communities.
The population structure hardly changed during the Bosnian war .
Due to the twin birth of his wife Emira during the Bosnian War, the journalist Nedzib Vucelj noticed the frequent number of twin births. The journalist's research revealed that at least 21 pairs of twins were born in the city of 20,000 between 1992 and 1995. Using a specially created Facebook page, he managed to locate 200 more pairs of twins who had left Bužim during the war.
The city is hoping for a tourist boom from being named "City of Twins" and an annual meeting of the twins.
history
The place is dominated by the ruins of the medieval Croatian fortress and the old town. The older, inner part was built in the first half of the 14th century at the latest and was first mentioned in 1334 together with the place. The fortress was expanded in 1484 and later renewed several times. It played an important role in the defense system of the Croatian border region against the Ottoman attacks and was meanwhile ancestral seat of the Croatian noble family Jelačić , whose most famous representative - Joseph Jelačić von Bužim - is considered a national hero in Croatia. The Ottomans conquered it in 1576.
During the Bosnian War , Bužim was hardly affected by fighting. Only the eastern villages of Čava and Radac were damaged in the fighting for Bosanska Krupa.
economy
The municipality is characterized by forests and low mountain ranges. Only a few areas in the valleys can be used for agriculture. Before the war, manganese mining was the main employer in the Bužim municipality. However, he was discontinued.
Today the city lives mainly from the raspberry and chestnut harvest.
traffic
Bužim is located on the regional road 401-A from Bosanska Krupa to Velika Kladuša, which runs through the Bužimnica valley. There is no railway connection.
