geography

City panorama of Glamoč

Both town and municipality have belonged to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina since the Dayton Agreement . As a result of the agreement, a part of the municipality of the Republika Srpska was added, thereby reducing the area from 1096 km² to 867 km². The city of Glamoč is surrounded by mountains 930 m above sea level, about 200 km northwest of Sarajevo and 40 km northwest of the canton capital Livno .

The M15 main road from Mrkonjić Grad to Livno runs through Glamoč, but the municipality is otherwise poorly served by traffic. Large parts of the infrastructure were destroyed in the Bosnian war.

history

Before the beginning of the Bosnian War in 1992 there was an ethnically mixed population that was numerically dominated by the Bosnian Serbs (approx. 76%). The original population has been returning for several years. As a result of the war and displacement and displacement, the population fell from 12,000 to less than 4,000 at the 2013 census, most of whom lived in the actual city of Glamoč. 43.5% of the residents described themselves as Serbs , 32.4% as Bosniaks and 23.5% as Croatians . This made Glamoč one of the few communities in the country in which all three ethnic groups are represented to a significant extent.

The medieval fortress

music

The “Glamoč Round Dance” or “Silent Glamoč Round Dance” (“Gluho Glamočko kolo”), which is traditionally performed without instrumental accompaniment, is known throughout the former Yugoslavia. The rhythm is only "played" with the (wooden) shoes. This dance is said to have been a wedding initiation ritual in which one could test the physical endurance and resilience of the potential spouse.
