Istočno Novo Sarajevo ( Serbian - Cyrillic Источно Ново Сарајево , "East New Sarajevo") is an association municipality (opština) in the center of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is located on the south-eastern outskirts of the capital Sarajevo and was created in 1992 during the Bosnian War as a split from the prewar community of Novo Sarajevo . It is located in the Republika Srpska directly on the entity border and is part of the city of Istočno Sarajevo . The seat of the municipality is in the district Lukavica.
geography
The municipality consists of an urban and a rural part. The former form the foothills of Sarajevo's new town in Lukavica and Dobrinja , which are characterized by prefabricated buildings , while the latter form the villages on the western slope of Trebević and Jahorina . The largest part of the community area is - despite the community name - sparsely populated, densely forested mountainous area.
The districts of Klek, Kozarevići, Lukavica, Miljevići, Petrovići, Toplik, Tvrdimići and part of the Novo Sarajevo settlement belong to Istočno Novo Sarajevo.
Istočno Novo Sarajevo is connected to the eastern part of Istočno Sarajevo around Pale via the R446a road.
history
The districts of today's municipality of Istočno Novo Sarajevo belonged to the community of Novo Sarajevo until the beginning of the Bosnian War in 1992. During the siege of Sarajevo , some of the districts were fiercely contested. After the new community was founded, it was initially called Srpsko Novo Sarajevo (Српскo Ново Сарајево, "Serbian New Sarajevo"). After the Bosnian Constitutional Court banned ethnic references in place names in 2004, the community was given its current name.
population
At the 2013 census, the community had 10,642 inhabitants. 96.3% of them described themselves as Serbs , 1% as Croats and 0.4% as Bosniaks . 2.3% did not belong to any or any other group. Even before the war, the rural parts of the community were almost exclusively inhabited by Serbs.
