Čajniče ( Serbian - Cyrillic Чајниче ) is a place in the east of the Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the seat of the municipality of the same name.
history
The city was first mentioned in 1477. At that time Čajniče was the only place in Sanjak Herzegovina where iron ore was mined. The ore deposits and the trade route between Dubrovnik and Istanbul ensured the region's development during this period.
During the Bosnian War , a large part of the non-Serbian population was displaced. The Sinan Beg Mosque from 1570 and four other mosques were destroyed and not rebuilt. Today there is a mosque and the second is under construction
geography
Čajniče is located in the far east of Bosnia near the border with Montenegro at an altitude of about 800 m. The municipal area is characterized by mountain ranges that rise up to 1500 m.
Neighboring municipalities are Foča , Novo Goražde and Rudo , as well as Pljevlja in Montenegro and Priboj in Serbia .

At the 1991 census, the municipality of Čajniče had 8,956 inhabitants, including
- Serbs 4,709 (52.57%)
- Bosniaks 4,024 (44.93%)
- Yugoslavs 77 (0.85%)
- Croatians 5 (0.05%)
- Other 141 (1.60%)
3,152 people lived in the main town of Čajniče.
By the 2013 census, the population had shrunk to below 5,000. Even before the war, the community was marked by strong migration. In 1971 the population was 11,602. Of the Bosniak residents who were expelled or fled during the Bosnian War, only a small number returned to Čajniče. In 2013, of a total of only 4,895 inhabitants, 3,972 described themselves as Serbs (81.1%) and 884 as Bosniaks (18.1%). 39 residents indicated different or no affiliation.
The municipality comprises a total of 36 places: Avlija, Batkovići, Batovo, Batotići, Bezujno, Borajno, Brezovice, Bučkovići na Bezujanci, Glamočevići, Gložin, Đakovići, Zaborak, Ifsar, Kamen, Kapov Han, Karovići, Krstacje, Lađevci, Luke Metaljka, Milatkovići, Miljeno, Mištar, Podavrelo, Ponikve, Prvanj, Slatina, Staronići, Stopići, Sudići, Todorovići, Trpinje, Tubrojevići, Hunkovići and Čajniče.
economy
Before the war, Čajniče was characterized by wood processing and textile industry. However, the largest companies in both sectors ( Stakorina and Vrelo ) are in bankruptcy proceedings.
