Gacko ( Serbian - Cyrillic Гацко , [ gǎtskɔ ]) is a small town and the center of the large municipality of the same name in the Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina . The municipality of Gacko has about 8,500 inhabitants.
geography
The city is located about 50 kilometers east of Nevesinje in the Gatačko polje plateau in eastern Herzegovina at an altitude of 940 m in the immediate vicinity of the Montenegrin border. Immediately west of the city is a large open-cast coal mine that supplies the local power plant.

history
The area was already settled in Illyrian times, but Gacko is only mentioned in the 12th century. In the area there are still several necropolises with the typical " Stećci "
In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Serbian Kingdom of Travunia from the 8th to the middle of the 13th century . From the middle of the 13th century it was ruled by the Serbian dynasty of Vojinović and Altomanović . In early June 1941 came in Gacko to a massacre of about 170 ethnic Serbs that of Ustasha perpetrated -Angehörigen.
During the Bosnian War , the region was largely spared from fighting. However, a large part of the non-Serbian population was displaced. On December 7, 2008, the eve of the festival of sacrifice , the recently rebuilt mosque in the Fazlagića Kula district was completely destroyed by fire. The cause of the fire was suspected to be a fault in the electrical system, but an attack could not be ruled out either.
