Derventa ( Serbian - Cyrillic Дервента ) is a city with about 25,000 inhabitants in the north of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is located in the Republika Srpska .
Before the war in Bosnia, Derventa was an industrial city that was partially destroyed. After the war, most of the factories did not start operating again. Big employers are missing, the cityscape is dominated by some renovated houses from the socialist era and newly built cafes and small businesses.

Derventa is located in the Ukrina valley , a right tributary of the Save . In the summer of 2010, the city was badly affected by flooding. The Opština Derventa borders on the municipalities of Srbac , Brod , Modriča , Doboj , Prnjavor and in the north on Croatia .

Before the Bosnian War, the ethnic distribution of the population of Derventa was fairly even. At the time of the 1991 census, the city of Derventa had 17,748 inhabitants.

56,489 inhabitants lived in the municipality of Derventa at the same time, of whom 22,938 (40.6%) were Serbs , 21,952 (38.9%) were Croatians , 7,086 (12.54%) were Muslim and 3,348 (5.92%) ) called Yugoslavs .

Between 1905 and 1942 there was a large group of German-speaking residents in the Polje district. They came partly from the German settlement in Windthorst ( Nova Topola ), partly from the then Austro-Hungarian Galicia . In 1942, the majority were for Germany relocated . Only a few stayed in Derventa. They were those who had Croatian or Serbian spouses.

Derventa is on Magistral Road 17-2 ( Brod - Doboj ). It is 26 kilometers to the international border crossing to Slavonski Brod and 31 kilometers to the Croatian motorway 3 ( Zagreb - Belgrade ). Magistral roads also lead to Gradiška (77 km) and Banja Luka (83 km).
In 1879, Derventa was connected to the railway network with the opening of the Bosanski Brod - Žepče section of the Bosna Railway leading to Sarajevo . In 1968 the traffic on the section Derventa - Doboj and in 1969 on the remaining branch line to Bosanski Brod was stopped.
