Stari Grad ("Old Town") is a municipality ( općina ) with almost 37,000 inhabitants in the urban area of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo . During the Bosnian War , the Serbian-dominated eastern part of the municipality split off and today forms the municipality of Istočni Stari Grad ("Eastern Old Town") in the Republika Srpska .

The municipality of Stari Grad is bordered by the municipalities of Ilijaš in the north, Istočni Stari Grad in the east and south and Centar in the west. Here is the Ottoman city center of Sarajevo, the Baščaršija , with the most famous sights such as the Sebilj , the Gazi Husrev Beg mosque , the Latin bridge and the Vijećnica , the old town hall. The Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral from the 19th century is also located in Stari Grad, while the western, younger half of the city center belongs to the Centar municipality. The Miljacka crosses the municipality, which includes not only the densely populated old town, but also wooded areas north and south on the slopes of Trebević . Other districts that belong to the municipality of Stari Grad are Alifakovac , Bistrik and Bentbaša on Miljacka, and Vratnik . The municipality also includes the rural mjesna zajednica Mošćanica on the entity border with the Republika Srpska, named after the stream of the same name.

At the 2013 census, the municipality of Stari Grad had a total of 36,976 inhabitants, of which 88.7% identified themselves as Bosniaks . In addition to Croats (1.9%) and Serbs (1.3%), 8.1% also stated that they belong to another or no ethnic group. As early as 1991, the proportion of Yugoslavs and “others” in the community was above average.
