The Latin Bridge ( Latinska ćuprija / Латинска ћуприја) is an Ottoman stone arch bridge over the Miljacka in the city center of Sarajevo . In the time of Yugoslavia it was named after Gavrilo Princip , the assassin on Archduke Franz Ferdinand . The assassination attempt of June 28, 1914 , which is considered to have triggered the First World War , occurred at the north end of the bridge.

history

The Latin Bridge is one of the oldest existing bridges in Sarajevo. In 1541, a bridge was first mentioned at this point, which was probably made of wood. The construction of a stone bridge at this point is mentioned in 1565. A flood severely damaged the bridge in 1791. It was restored in 1798 and 1799. On June 28, 1917, three years after the murder of Franz Ferdinand, the city administration inaugurated a memorial for the Archduke and his wife at the Latin Bridge. After the end of Austrian rule and the establishment of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia , the monument was removed and the bridge was named after the assassin Princip. It only got its previous name back in the course of the Bosnian War . Parts of the monument are now in the Sarajevo Museum .

The bridge originally consisted of five arches that rested on four bridge piers. There are circular openings, the so-called "eyes", in two pillars. The largest arch with the two eyes can also be found in a stylized form in the city arms of Sarajevo. As part of the regulation of the Miljacka, the northernmost arch and half of the first pillar were walled into the bank reinforcement, so that the bridge now only has four arches.

The Latin bridge was last restored in 2003/2004. Today it is closed to traffic.

Surname

The name "Latin bridge" is based on the fact that the bridge is the shortest connection between the Roman Catholic cathedral in the city center and the area to the left of the river, which used to be predominantly Catholic and therefore known as "Latinluk".
