Šipovo ( Serbian - Cyrillic Шипово ) is a place and the municipality of the same name in Bosnia and Herzegovina and has been part of the Republika Srpska since the Bosnian War .
The area of the municipality of Šipovo amounts to a total of 510 km², with almost 11,000 inhabitants (2013) it is considered a small town. The lowest point at 440 m is the confluence of the two rivers Janj and Pliva and the highest point at 1904 m is the Vitorog peak. Before the war in Bosnia, Serbs made up the absolute majority of the population with around 80%, while 16% were Bosniaks . Today around 90% of the population are Serbs.
Šipovo - 460 m above sea level - is a paradise for hunters and anglers. Four rivers - Pliva, Janj, Sokočnica and Lubovica - with their rapids, waterfalls and eddies make Šipovo one of the most attractive nature reserves in the Balkans. The remains of a Roman military camp - Castrum (I-II centuries AD) and an early Christian basilica were found here. Many precious monuments from those times have been preserved, such as a statue of Minerva and a statue of Jupiter.
In the Middle Ages, Šipovo was also of great importance due to the strategic location of the Sokograd fortress (Soko = the falcon), which rises above the canyon of the Sokočnica river, where the last Bosnian king Stjepan Tomašević lived for a while.
The Pliva springs and the water mills - 7 km from Šipovo - and the Janj waterfalls are a special attraction, and the Vagan cave is another attraction. The mountains around Šipovo with their hundred-year-old forests are excellent areas for hunting large and small game, and the streams of the clear rivers are rich in brown trout and grayling.
The motel “Strojice” was built on the 15th kilometer of the road that leads through the canyon of the Janj river in the direction of Kupres and is also the shortest connection from the west and north of the country to the central Adriatic.
There are 11 places in the community; Šipovo, Volari, Natpolje, Grbavica, Babici, Pribeljci, Pljeva, Dragnic Podovi, Sokolac, Mujdzici and Strojice.
The area is rich in natural resources, including wood, gypsum, building sand, coal and the minerals copper, iron, manganese and quartz crystals.
The nearest towns are Mrkonjić Grad and Jajce , both around 20 km away. The infrastructure was renewed in 2005 and covers over 220 km of roads.
history
Šipovo is better known in history as Sokograd. From a small village, Sokol developed into a large castle in the 14th century, which had to endure many wars. Sokol Castle can now be visited as a ruin and was a popular holiday destination in the 1980s. The long-time dictator of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito was also on vacation in Šipovo. Today Šipovo is a recreational area.
Šipovo also has many buildings from earlier eras such as churches and ancient finds. Well known here is the Manastir Glogovac .
Ancient finds from the year 597 also make the area interesting for archaeologists.
There are also monuments to Simo Šolaja and Draža Mihailović in Šipovo .
traffic
Until around 1970, Šipovo was opened up by the stone ice rink , which led from Jajce to Lička Kaldrma and Prijedor .
