Simo Šolaja

Simo Šolaja (* 1905 , † 1942 ) was a commander of the Yugoslav partisan battalion "Iskra" and leader of a peasant uprising. He was posthumously proclaimed a folk hero.

Šolaja was given great veneration by the Serbian part of the population, especially because he protected them from the attacks of the Ustasha . Šolaja fell in 1942 in a night battle over a Croatian fortification in Kupres . Even today streets, schools, etc. are named after him. A memorial was erected to him in the Bosnian municipality of Šipovo .

Simo Šolaja was also the nickname of the war criminal Simo Zarić .
