Teaching
From 1980 to 1991 he taught as a professor of garden architecture at the Intercantonal Technical Center in Rapperswil and from 1981 to 1985 he was technical director of the Botanical Garden in Brüglingen near Basel. From 1985 to 1997 he was a lecturer in landscape design at the ETH Zurich . From 1992 to 1997 Kienast was a professor at the Institute for Landscape and Garden at the University of Karlsruhe (TH). In 1997 he was appointed to the ETH Zurich, where he took over the newly created professorship for landscape architecture , which he held until his death.
Appreciation
Not least because of his collaboration with the leading Swiss architects of his time ( Diener & Diener ; Herzog & de Meuron ; Gigon Guyer ; Meili, Peter ; Helmut Federle ; Karljosef Schattner , German architect), Kienast was one of the most renowned landscape architects in Europe of the 1990s and achieved with numerous parks and gardens of architectural character as well as through its lively publication activity, international reputation. The most important sources of inspiration for him were not only the abstract works of art of minimalism , especially those by Donald Judd , Carl Andre , Sol LeWitt and Richard Long , but also the American Land Art and Swiss landscape architecture by Ernst Cramer and Fred Eicher . The skillful combination of architectural and landscape elements, aesthetic and ecological concepts shapes the special expressiveness of Kienast's gardens, parks and squares.
Kienast's projects for the Expo 2000 in Hanover , the Masoalahalle in the Zurich Zoo , the International Garden Show in Graz 2000 and the Tate Modern Gallery in London are among the most internationally known works of landscape architecture.

Quotes
- "The garden is the last luxury of our days, because it demands what has become most precious in our society: time, attention and space."
- “Theory is part of the intellectual part of our work. If it's only about baking beautiful molds, then of course I don't need any theory "
- “Our work is the search for a nature in the city whose color is not only green, but also gray. The nature of the city means trees, hedges, lawns, but also pavement that is permeable to water, wide open spaces, strict canals, high walls, open fresh air or visual axes, the center and the edge.
