Banovići ( Serbian - Cyrillic Бановићи ) is a small town in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is the main town and administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the Tuzla canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina .

history

The town of Banovići has been developing since the late Middle Ages, but only achieved its current importance with the start of coal mining in the 19th century.

Banovići town was only slightly affected by the Bosnian War . Some settlements in the west of the municipality, however, were directly on the front line and were largely destroyed.

The area of ​​the Banovići municipality extends on the northern edge of the heavily forested Konjuh Mountains, which rise to over 1,000 m. There are lignite deposits in the Konjuh , which are also mined.

Neighboring municipalities are Kladanj , Lukavac , Olovo , Zavidovići and Živinice .

The localities Gornji Bučik , Treštenica Donja and Treštenica Gornja belong to the municipality .

In Banovići, lignite has been mined in open-cast mining for a long time . In addition to coal mining, the textile and electrical industries are particularly important.

The road network is comparatively well developed. The area has several railway connections that are used exclusively for freight traffic. The narrow-gauge Banovići coal railway has also gained some fame as a tourist attraction.
