Cazin ( Serbian - Cyrillic Цазин ) is a city and the associated municipality ( općina ) in the extreme northwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina .

It is located 25 km north of Bihać , around 230 km northwest of Sarajevo and around 15 km from the border with Croatia . Cazin belongs to the Una-Sana canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina , in the Bosanska Krajina region . The Una River crosses the southern municipality. Geologically, the Općina is determined by incised, partly wooded and rocky, partly agriculturally good terrain. With a height of 797 m, the Velika Gomila mountain in the southeast is the highest point of the Opština, which is otherwise at an average height of approx. 300 m.

At the 1991 census, the community had 63,409 inhabitants. Of these, 61,693 identified themselves as Bosniaks (97.29%) and 778 as Serbs (1.23%). 938 residents (1.48%) stated other affiliations. Today the municipality of Cazin has 69,411 inhabitants.

In 1991 there were 9,775 people in the city of Cazin itself. Here, too, the Bosniaks made up the absolute majority with 9166 residents (93.77%). 251 residents described themselves as Yugoslavs (2.57%).

history

In Cazin there are archaeological finds of the so-called settlement Veliki Čungar u Kupresima, which mainly date from the Iron Age. In 1522 the Bishop of Knin made Cazin his seat after Knin fell. The ruins of a castle lie on a hill in the city center. It was renewed in 1584 and abandoned in 1851.

Station Cazin-Srbljani at the Una-Bahn

The M 4-2 trunk road ( Bihać - Velika Kladuša ) runs through Cazin . A regional road connects the place with Bosanska Krupa . There is no railway connection directly in town. The Cazin-Srbljani train station is located several kilometers from the village in the Una valley.
