history
About a month after the beginning of the Bosnian War , Kalesija was attacked for the first time by troops of the Bosnian Serbs on May 2, 1992 and captured by May 11, 1992. However, on May 23, 1992, the government army was able to regain the city.
In 1995, the Dayton Treaty officially divided the Kalesija community . The southern part of the municipality - about a quarter of the total area - fell to the Republika Srpska and has since formed the municipality of Osmaci ; the larger northern part belongs to the BiH Federation as the municipality of Kalesija.
population
In 1991 the municipality of Kalesija had 41,795 inhabitants; 79.5% of them described themselves as Bosniaks and 18.4% as Serbs . In the area of today's Osmaci municipality, however, the Serbs were in the majority.
In connection with the disappearance of the predominantly Serbian villages in the east and the influx of around 4,000 refugees from Zvornik and Bijeljina , the population today consists almost exclusively of Bosniaks.
