history

In 1991 the municipality of Lopare , to which Čelić and its districts belonged at that time, joined the so-called “Serbian Autonomous Region Semberija and Majevica”, which was founded by nationalist Serbs from Bijeljina and the surrounding area. The majority Muslim population of the western part of the municipality of Lopare then decided in a referendum in November 1991 to split off from Lopare and found the municipality of Čelić. At the same time, the ethnic separation in Lopare, which had begun by the Serbian autonomous regions, was completed. The new municipality of Čelić was now predominantly Bosniak, the municipality of Lopare predominantly Serbian.

population

In 1991 there were 12,445 people living on the territory of today's Čelić commune, which was a third of the total population of Lopare commune. While the Serbs were in the majority with 56% in the municipality, 86% of the population on Čelić territory described themselves as Bosniaks and 9% as Croatians . In nine out of ten places there was a Bosniak majority, only in Drijenča a Croatian.
