from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mjesna zajednica or Mesna zajednica (Croatian / Bosnian or Serbian for local community , more rarely also village community or local association ), MZ for short , is the name for a communal self-government community within an Općina (municipality) that emerged in the former Yugoslavia .

The MZ is a territorial accepts broken down by settlements, villages or neighborhoods organization partly administrative and municipal tasks. Usually several settlements ( Naselje ) are combined in one MZ and this receives the name of and the seat in one of the larger settlements of the local community. In contrast to the superior Općina (municipality), the MZ does not exercise any legislative functions.

Currently the term is still used, at least in Bosnia and Herzegovina . However, due to the regulatory sovereignty of the entities there, there are no nationwide uniform regulations and their legal status is unclear. In some areas, an MZ can be officially recognized or in others it can only function as a non-governmental organization .
