Velika Kladuša ( Cyrillic Велика Кладуша ; German outdated Groß-Kladuss ) is a city in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina . The town center is about 2 km from the border with Croatia and belongs to the canton of Una-Sana .
The municipality of Velika Kladuša covers 331 km² and has about 45,000 inhabitants. The majority of the population is Bosniak .
One of the largest markets in Bosnia is located in the village, which visitors from Slovenia and Croatia use to buy cheap goods. In Velika Kladuša there is a historic castle ( Stari Grad ), which serves as a place for excursions to the city.
The city is the seat of the agricultural group Agrokomerc , whose former director Fikret Abdić proclaimed the Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia , which included the area around the city, during the Bosnian War . Velika Kladuša was the capital of this internationally unrecognized state entity.
In 2018, in the course of the refugee crisis in Europe, a refugee camp was set up in Velika Kladuša , which migrants use as a temporary residence before crossing the border into the European Union . There the place also became the scene of a confrontation when the Bosnian police prevented refugees from continuing their journey.
