Istočni Stari Grad ( Serbian - Cyrillic Источни Стари Град , "Eastern Old Town") is an association municipality (opština) in the center of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is located on the eastern outskirts of the capital Sarajevo and was created in 1992 during the Bosnian War as a split from the pre-war community of Sarajevo-Stari Grad . In the Republika Srpska it lies directly on the entity boundary . Istočni Stari Grad is a part of the city of Istočno Sarajevo . The seat of the municipality is the village of Hreša .
geography
The municipality is located in the mountainous area to the east and south of the old town of Sarajevo and is cut in the middle by the Miljacka canyon . The highest point of the municipality is the summit of Trebević ( 1629 m ), which overlooks the Bosnian capital. Due to the history of its origins, the municipality consists of two parts that are not territorially connected. Also in the larger southern part of the municipality there are no direct road connections between some places via the municipality.
Despite the municipality name, no part of Sarajevo's old town belongs to the municipality; however, this consists of sparsely populated area.
The districts of Blizanci, Bulozi, Donje Međuše, Dovlići, Gornje Biosko, Gornje Međuše, Hreša, Kumane, Njemanica, Sirovine, Studenkovići, Šljeme, Vučja Luka and Viosukarknik, as well as smaller parts of the Gemini Biosko, Faletje Biosko, belong to Istočni Stari Grad Rakova Noga and Stari Grad.
history
The districts of today's municipality of Istočni Stari Grad belonged to the community of Sarajevo-Stari Grad until the beginning of the Bosnian War in 1992. During the siege of Sarajevo , the mountains of the municipality, from where the city center is clearly visible, served the Vojska Republike Srpske as positions. After the new community was founded, it was initially called Srpski Stari Grad (Српски Стари Град, "Serbian Old Town"). After the Bosnian Constitutional Court banned ethnic references in place names in 2004, the community was given its current name.
population
At the 2013 census, the community had 1,131 inhabitants. 94.7% of these identified themselves as Serbs and 3.8% as Bosniaks . Before the war, almost all of today's districts had a Serb majority, apart from Sirovine and Vuknić in the northern part of the municipality, where almost exclusively Bosniaks lived. The latter villages are almost uninhabited to this day.
