The Baščaršija is a bazaar and the historic city center of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo . It was created in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isaković founded the Ottoman city below the settlement of Vratnik . The word Baščaršija comes from the Turkish . Baš means something like “main” or “primary”, while čaršija is the Turkish word for bazaar or “ market ”. Baščaršija is officially just the name of the central square of the Ottoman Old Town, but is used colloquially for the entire Ottoman market district.

The Baščaršija is located north of the Miljacka river and today belongs to the municipality of Stari Grad . In the Baščaršija there are many important historical buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev Beg Mosque or the Sahat Kula (clock tower). Nowadays the Baščaršija is the main attraction for tourists in Sarajevo.

Space design

In the middle of Baščaršija, which is closed to traffic, is the Sebilj , a public fountain. Telali Street , a main street on which the Sarajevo tram also runs, runs along its northern edge . This has the Baščaršija stop , from which, due to the one-way street principle, only journeys in a westerly direction are possible. In the southeast of the square is the Baščaršijska džamija mosque .
