Mario Tokić (born July 23, 1975 in Derventa , SFR Yugoslavia , today Bosnia and Herzegovina ) is a former Croatian football player and current football coach .

Player career

Tokić's football career began in the youth team of NK Rijeka , where he also played in the first team for five years. He then played for Dinamo Zagreb from 1998 to 2001 . In the summer of 2001, every Croat joined Mario Bazina in the Austrian Bundesliga for the Grazer AK , where he quickly became one of the most important players for the team and also their captain. With the GAK, the central defender was Austrian champion in 2004 , twice Austrian cup winner (2002 & 2004) and Supercup winner in 2002. A highlight of his career was the long-distance goal for the GAK 1-0 away win in the 2004/05 Champions League qualification against the eventual winner Liverpool FC . In the summer of 2005, Tokić moved to Austria Wien for two years , with whom he became Austrian champion in 2006 and two cup winners (2006 and 2007).

In May 2007, the defender moved from Austria to arch rivals SK Rapid Wien , where he became champion straight away in 2008. In the spring season, however, Tokić could not play because he suffered a herniated disc . In the summer of 2009, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement due to another violation. After half a year of being without a club and another year and a half at the Croatian first division club NK Zagreb , Tokić ended his career in 2011.

Mario Tokić played 28 times in the Croatian national team from 1998 to 2006 and was in the squad for the 2004 European Championships and the 2006 World Cup , but was not used in both competitions.

Coaching career

In 2014 Tokić took over the position of assistant coach at the Croatian first division club Dinamo Zagreb, which he held until the end of 2015. Since the beginning of 2016 he has been employed as a trainer for league competitor NK Lokomotiva Zagreb , initially as an assistant and interim trainer and since November 2016 as head trainer.
