Wendy Rene

Wendy Rene (actually Mary Frierson ; * 1947 in Memphis , Tennessee ; † December 16, 2014 ) was an American soul singer who had some minor soul hits in the mid-1960s. Her biggest hit is After Laughter Comes Tears from 1964 .

Life

Wendy Rene began her singing career together with her brother Johnny Frierson as part of the group The Drapels . At the initiative of her music label Stax Records , however, she started a solo career. Their first and biggest hit, After Laughter Comes Tears , was released in 1964 and was actually recorded by the entire group The Drapels, but attributed only to them when it was released by Stax Records. The song was sampled in Tearz by the Wu-Tang Clan on their first album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) . Alicia Keys sang a modified version of the song on her 2007 album As I am . The song is also used in the films Gegen die Wand and Lucky Number Slevin .

Wendy Rene later lived with her family in Memphis, Tennessee and sang in a gospel choir.
