The Opština Priboj ( Serbian - Cyrillic Прибој ) is a large Serbian municipality in the mountainous region of southwestern Serbia with about 27,000 inhabitants. Its administrative center is the small town of Priboj.

geography

Priboj is located in the far west of central Serbia , south of the Zlatibor Mountains . The municipality covers a total area of ​​553 km 2 in the Lim valley and borders on Bosnia and Herzegovina in the west . The Uvac flows into the Lim 4 km west of Priboj .

Within the municipality is the village of Sastavci with 270 inhabitants , which is an exclave of Bosnia and Herzegovina and belongs to the Bosnian republic Republika Srpska .

Opština Priboj includes the districts (mesne zajednice) Stari Grad, Novi Priboj , Banja, Kratovo, Rača, Sastavci, Bučje, Krajčinovići, Zabrnjica, Sjeverin , Strmac, Pribojska Goleša, Mažići and Kalafati.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1459 in written sources of the Ottoman Empire , to which it belonged until 1912. After the end of the First Balkan War , Priboj became part of the Kingdom of Serbia in accordance with the provisions of the London Treaty in 1913 . During the Second World War, the municipal area was occupied by German troops as part of the Balkan campaign in 1941 and handed over to Italian occupation forces. The place could only be liberated in January 1945.

In the newly established Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , Priboj was built into an attractive industrial location and the number of inhabitants increased tenfold. The automobile factory FAP became the largest employer . The deindustrialization of the Balkan states that has started since the end of the Yugoslav wars also affects Priboj: Most of the factories have been closed or are in economic difficulties. Since then, the community has lost almost half of its residents to rural exodus.

About 75.9% of the community residents describe themselves as Serbs , about 14% as Bosniaks and about 7.2% as ethnic Muslims .

economy

Priboj is an industrial city and had developed particularly strongly in the 1970s and 1980s. Fabrika automobila Priboj is one of the largest employers .
