The long struggle between the Montenegrins and the Ottomans for the city was decided in favor of Montenegro at the Berlin Congress in 1878. During fighting during the Second World War , the city was almost completely destroyed. In Kolašin in 1943 the "Anti-Fascist Council of the People's Liberation Struggle of Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor" was founded - the later People's Assembly of the Montenegrins. In the 1980s, the site was threatened with final destruction when a reservoir was planned on the Tara River , but this idea was rejected.
