Tara Canyon

The river arises at an altitude of about 2000 meters in the Žijevo Mountains , on the Montenegrin- Albanian border, about 30 km south of Kolašin from the confluence of the Opasanica and the somewhat larger and longer Veruša . From Prošćenje to the confluence with the Piva near Hum on the Montenegrin- Bosnian border, the Tara has cut more than 1,300 m deep into the surrounding mountains over the course of thousands of years, forming the Tara Gorge. The river has an average gradient of 3.6 m / km in this area.

Tara Canyon

The Tara Gorge is 78 kilometers long and in places over 1300 meters deep. It is one of the longest and deepest canyons in Europe and, along with the Colorado Gorge in the USA , the Colca Valley in Peru and some Asian gorges, is one of the largest in the world.

In 1980, the lower educated than Gorge area of the river was as part of the National Park Durmitor by the UNESCO in the World Heritage List was added.

This is 350 meters long and up to 150 meters high.
