The Herrenburg is an abandoned Carolingian ring wall south of Essen-Werden on the left side of the Ruhr on the Pastoratsberg.

It is an oval structure, 150 m by 100 m in diameter, with remains of masonry made of rubble stones and a series of walls. Finds from the 9th to 11th centuries indicate that the castle complex was built in the early Middle Ages . The mountain is named after the medieval rectory of St. Clemens , which later stood in the middle of the ramparts. The Alteburg is located further south .
