Vehbi Dibra

Haxhi Abdyl Aziz Vehbi Agolli (born March 12, 1867 in Dibër , died March 24, 1937 in Tirana ) was an Albanian politician, translator, theologian and representative of Dibër at the Albanian declaration of independence. He was also the first chairman of the Albanian Senate and as the first chairman of the Sunni Muslim Community of Albania from 1920 to 1929 of the Grand Mufti of Albania. Vehbi Dibra is also honored as the main organizer of the Dibër Congress.

Life

Born on March 12, 1867 as Vehbi Agolli in the Dibër region, he studied Islamic theology, law and philosophy, and was later appointed Mufti of Dibër. His father Ahmet ( Effendi ) Agolli also served as Mufti of Dibër. In 1909 Vehbi Agolli was appointed chairman of the Congress of Dibër, a previous meeting to instigate the anti-Ottoman revolt of 1910. In November 1912, he represented Dibër in the Assembly of Vlorë , at which the independence of Albania was declared and a national congress was formed. The MPs of the National Congress elected eighteen delegates to the Albanian Senate, of which Vehbi Dibra was the first chairman.

In order to influence that part of the Sunni community of Albania that based its view of Albania's declaration of independence on the clergy, Vehbi Dibra issued a fetva and welcomed the declaration of independence as a gift from God . As a member of the reformist faction of the Sunni community of Albania, he was appointed its chairman as Grand Mufti in 1920 . During his tenure, which lasted until 1929, the owners of the Vakëf were documented and registered, the administration centralized and the worship services standardized. Vehbi Dibra also began publishing the weekly newspaper Zani i Naltë and introduced the use of the Albanian language in religious ceremonies.
