PlayStation VR (known under the code name Project Morpheus during development, officially abbreviated as PS VR ) is a virtual reality headset developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4 by Sony Interactive Entertainment that receives exclusive games that are not available with any other virtual Reality glasses are playable. The PlayStation VR is a product of the PlayStation brand .

It was announced at the Game Developers Conference 2014. Sony announced at the Game Developers Conference 2016 that the PlayStation VR will be released in October 2016.

overview

The PlayStation VR has a 5.7 inch large OLED -Panel with a screen resolution of Full HD (1920 × 1080 pixels , which corresponds to a pixel density of 386 pixels per inch (ppi)) and a refresh rate of 120 Hz is not, however, be supported in every game. The first and as of March 2017 only game that supports the PS VR's 120 Hz is Korix . The packaging of the PS VR also includes a processor box that enables output to a television set and the provision of 3D audio effects through a 3.5 millimeter headphone socket. The headset also has nine position LEDs to ensure tracking by the PlayStation camera in 360 degrees . The system cost 399.99 euros when it was first released without the PlayStation camera required. The RRP was later reduced to 299.99 euros. The official sales start was on October 13, 2016. By December 3, 2017, over 2 million copies had been sold. Later the 3 million copies sold were finally cracked. As of March 3, 2019, over 4.2 million devices had been sold. By December 31, 2019, the PS VR had sold 5 million times. PlayStation 4 Pro users benefit from the PlayStation VR, depending on the game, from higher visibility, higher resolutions, more stable frame rates, better anti-aliasing and / or other visual features.

history

Sony showed its interest in head-mounted displays as early as the 1990s and developed the Glasstron in 1997 . In 2002 the PUD-J5A appeared . It was only available through Sony's online shop in Japan and was probably never intended for regular retail. Shuhei Yoshida presented Project Morpheus at the Game Developers Conference 2014 . According to him, "the next PlayStation innovation will have a major impact on the future of video games." On September 15, 2015, Sony announced that it would finally rename Project Morpheus to PlayStation VR .

As part of gamescom 2016, visitors were able to try out the VR headset not only at the Sony booth, but also at numerous other developers and publishers. PlayStation VR also received a Gamescom Award in the Best Hardware category.

Even if PlayStation VR is primarily hardware for the gaming sector, Sony plans to offer other software for the VR headset. In October 2016, it was announced that both Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music will own or establish specialized teams that will produce virtual reality content.

With the release of the PlayStation 5 at the end of 2020, a new version of the PlayStation VR (PS VR 2.0) should also appear.

hardware

PlayStation VR is connected to the PlayStation 4 via a separate hardware box (the processing unit ), which is responsible for the actual graphics calculation and outputs the image to the TV set or monitor via an HDMI cable. This is especially necessary if the wearer of the head-mounted display wants to play with someone who does not have a VR device. Only with this additional connection box can it be guaranteed that PlayStation VR users and game controller users experience the highest possible game quality. The headset is connected to the hardware box via another cable. A remote control for switching the headset on and off is also attached to the cable, and the headphones for the audio signals are also connected to this. There are nine LEDs on the headset itself, which the PlayStation camera connected to the console uses to determine the head movements of the player.

Compared to VR glasses on the PC, such as the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift , the PlayStation VR has a lower resolution. It offers only 960 × 1080 pixels per eye, while the two PC counterparts each deliver 1080 × 1200 pixels per eye. According to Sony, the lower resolution due to the better display technology and the refresh rate of 120 Hz should hardly be noticed.

With the local multiplayer function, two players can play against each other - one on the TV, the other on the PlayStation VR. In Monster Escape, for example, the VR player can hunt down other players as monsters. A maximum of one PlayStation VR can be connected to each Playstation, which is why the number of players is limited to five in this case.

Sony currently offers more than ten VR-compatible games for the PlayStation VR. A total of more than 60 VR games are already available. But older games and films can also be used in the so-called cinema mode, in which the content is shown on a virtual screen. For better control, the move controllers known from the PlayStation 3 and the AIM controller specially developed for PS VR can be used.

At the end of 2017 a revised version of the PlayStation VR appeared in the USA and Japan , in which the headset and the processing unit were slightly modified. In addition to small, cosmetic changes, the previously missing option of HDR passthrough has been implemented, with which HDR content can be looped through to the TV set directly via the processing unit. Up until then, you had to change the cables and connect them directly to the TV with HDR-capable TVs every time the corresponding content was to be played on the PlayStation 4.

The revised version was also released in Europe at the beginning of 2018. At the same time, Sony also released new bundles that now contain the PlayStation camera, stereo headphones and, depending on the variant, one or more games. In addition, Sony lowered the retail price significantly to 299.99 euros a little later to make PSVR affordable for a wider range of buyers.
