PUD-J5A

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The PUD-J5A is a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 2 game console from Sony from 2002.

The head-mounted display appeared shortly after the PlayStation 2 was released . It was only available through Sony's online shop in Japan and was probably never intended for regular retail. In 2002 some devices were sold for the equivalent of around 500 euros. Little is known about the development process.

The device weighed 340 grams and had two 0.44-inch LCD screens that gave the viewer a 41-inch image. The displays had a resolution of 300 × 200 × 3 RGB pixels (180,000 pixels) over a field of view of 30 degrees. This corresponds to about a quarter of the field of view of the PlayStation VR today. The equipment also included a game controller that could be used to control games and applications, and stereo headphones.

The PUD-J5A was connected to the PlayStation 2 via a small control box via USB and video-in ( S-Video or Cinch ). The box was also used to control the menu. A 6-volt power supply unit was connected to the box for power supply.

The head movements were sampled via the head-mounted display. The device was not yet able to display stereoscopic 3D images, but only provided 2D images. The susceptibility to errors in the correct representation could also lead to VR disease .

The PUD-J5A was not a success on the market and is considered an extremely rare bizarre due to its low level of awareness.

Games and applications

Very few games with official PUD-J5A support have been released. Four flight games were available: two Energy Airforce games from Taito and Air Force Delta: Blue Wing Knights and Asmik Ace's Sidewinder V from Konami . Simple 2000 Version Vol. 33: The Jet Coaster - Yuuenchi Otsukurou! by 3D Publisher was a roller coaster game at an amusement park. Another game was Virtual View: RCT Eyes Play from Pony Canyon.

The PUD-J5A could also be used for a technology for displaying 360-degree videos that Sony had developed under the name FourthVIEW . Some applications of the technology, which had a display radius of 220 degrees and could be played on three PlayStation 2 units, each with a connected monitor, were compatible with the PUD-J5A. These included: The Keihin Kyuukou: Train Simulator Real , Over the Monochrome Rainbow featuring Shogo Hamada and A Visual Mix: Ayumi Hamasaki Dome Tour 2001 and Anime Space Venus starring Morning Musume .
