The Haseki Sultan Complex ( Turkish: Haseki Hürrem Sultan Külliyesi ) is a socio-religious building complex ( Külliye ) around the mosque of the same name in the Fatih district of Istanbul . It was built with the funds of a religious foundation of Haseki Sultan Hürrem ( Roxelane ), the wife of Sultan Suleyman I. The building complex is considered the first work of the Ottoman master architect Sinan in Istanbul after his appointment as court architect as the successor to Acemi İsa.

A soup kitchen ( imaret ) , a primary school (mekteb) , a university ( medrese ) and a hospital ( darüşşifa ) are grouped around the Friday mosque . The building was erected in several stages: the mosque was completed in 1538–39 ( AH 945), the madrasah 1539–40 (AH 946), the soup kitchen 1540–41 (AH 947) and the hospital 1550–51 (AH 957).

description

Floor plan and elevation ( Cornelius Gurlitt , 1912)

The mosque is built from alternating layers of stone and brick and has a minaret with a balcony. The portico ( son cemaat yeri ) consists of five arches vaulted by small domes that rest on slender marble columns. The prayer hall was originally vaulted by a 11.3 m wide dome. 1612-13, during the reign of Ahmed I , the mosque was enlarged and covered with a second dome, which was connected to the original building with two arches on two columns.

The hospital is built around an octagonal courtyard; it is the only one made entirely of ashlar . The medressa consists of 16 small cells and an auditorium, which are arranged in a U-shape around a courtyard. The soup kitchen also has a courtyard. In the north is the actual kitchen with four chimneys. Medrese and Imaret are decorated with glazed ceramic tiles, but not the mosque.

The building complex was restored from 2010 to 2012.
