Yo-kai Watch: Tanjō no Himitsu da Nyan! (2014)

Yo-kai Watch ( Japanese 妖怪 ウ ォ ッ チ , Yōkai Wotchi, dt. "Ghost / monster watch") is a series of role-playing games that is developed and published by Level-5 . The first game in the series was released in Japan on July 11, 2013, in North America on November 6, 2015, and in Europe on April 29, 2016. With Yo-kai Watch 2 , the first successor appeared in Japan on July 10, 2014 , and was released in three versions, Ganso, Honke and Shinuchi (on December 13, 2014). The European release date was April 7th 2017, the German versions are called Yo-kai Watch2 Knochige Gespenster / Strong Souls. This was followed by a spin-off with Yo-kai Watch Busters on July 11, 2015 . Yo-kai Watch 3 was released in Japan on July 16, 2016 and in Europe on December 7, 2018. On June 20, 2019, Yo-kai Watch 4 was launched in Japan. The game series was also adapted in the form of several manga series and an anime television series.

action

One day Nathan (in Japan Keita) finds a suspicious looking machine while looking for beetles in the forest and throws in some money. Whisper slips out of the capsule he receives from the machine and gives him the Yo-kai Watch, a wristwatch with the ability to visualize and summon spirits known as Yo-Kai .

From now on, Nathan can see the yo-kai around him, who make life difficult for his fellow human beings.

Nathan and Whisper begin to befriend all kinds of yo-kai, thereby collecting their yo-kai medals . With the medals, Nathan is able to use the Yo-kai Watch to summon his friendly Yo-kai and use them in the fight against evil Yo-kai.

Gameplay

Yo-kai Watch is a role-playing game in which the player slips into Nathan's role and searches for Yo-kai in his hometown Lenzhausen .

A radar and the lens of the Yo-kai watch are available to him. With the radar, the whereabouts can be roughly determined, while the actual detection requires the lens, which must be held over the moving Yo-kai for a predetermined time using either the sliding pad or the Nintendo 3DS touchscreen .

If a yo-kai is uncovered, it is visible without a lens. This is usually followed by a cut scene in which both the name of the yo-kai and his ability as well as the reason for his actions are mentioned. As a rule, the revealed Yo-kai must then be defeated by the player in combat.

In combat, the player has six Yo-Kai with whom he has made friends before. They automatically attack the opponent (s) with weak attacks. However, in order to win a fight, the player must use Ultiseel Strikes , which are a kind of special attack . To do this, the Ultiseelschlag must be activated and then various actions carried out on the touchscreen. These range from tapping (sometimes quickly) moving coins to tracing symbols that are displayed.

In addition to the main story, there are side quests in which special items and experience can be gained.

In Yo-kai Watch 2 , the location of the action is expanded to include the entire Kemamoto region and past where other Yo-kai can be encountered.

Wibble wobble

There are several smartphone apps for Yo-Kai Watch, the most successful is Yo-Kai Watch Puni Puni (Japanese), (American / European: Wibble Wobble ). Wibble Wobble is a puzzle game with weekly updates, so-called "events". This smartphone game went out of service in the western regions outside of Japan on May 31, 2018.

Manga

In addition to the video games, six manga adaptations have been produced so far . A shōnen manga has been published regularly since December 15, 2012 (issue 1/2013) CoroCoro Comic by Shogakukan . So far 16 anthologies have been published, which Shogakukan is also bringing out in Singapore. A German translation of twelve volumes has been published by Kazé Deutschland since November 2016 . Viz Media publishes the series in the USA. A shōjo manga of the same name has been published in Ciao magazine by the same publisher since December 27, 2013 . It is also published in Spain by Norma Editorial .

In addition to these two longer series, two Yonkoma series are being released: 4-panel Yo-kai Watch: Geragera Manga Theater by Coconas Rumba can be read in special editions of CoroCoro Comic since October 2014 and Yo-kai Watch: 4-panel Pun-Club by Santa Harukaze has been published in CoroCoro Ichiban magazine since April 2015 ! Both also appeared in an anthology each.
