Fire Emblem: Awakening ( Japanese フ ァ イ ア ー エ ム ブ レ ム 覚 醒 , Faiā Emuburemu: Kakusei ) is a strategy role-playing game for the Nintendo 3DS . It is the 13th installment in the Fire Emblem series and was developed by the Nintendo Intelligent Systems studio . In Japan the game was released on April 19, 2012, in North America on February 4, 2013 and in Europe on April 19.

action

The main character, whose name and appearance can be freely determined by the player, is found unconscious on the roadside by a group of soldiers and picked up. The soldiers are Chrom, the prince of the kingdom of Ylisse, which is ruled by the peace-loving Emmeryn, as well as his little sister Lissa and his bodyguard Frederick, who call themselves "shepherds". After a bandit attack on a nearby village, the soldiers take on the main character, who can no longer remember her previous life.

The kingdom of Ylisse has suffered severe provocations from the neighboring kingdom of Plegia. After the kidnapping of another "shepherdess" by the crazy Plegian King Gangrel and his companion Aversa, a war breaks out, in which the shepherds take part together with the main character and Chrom. They are supported by a mysterious swordsman who comes from the future and calls himself Marth, the legendary hero of earlier Fire Emblem games.

Announcements, publications and sales

Announcements

On September 12, 2011, Nintendo announced Fire Emblem for the 3DS for the first time at a pre-conference for the Tokyo Game Show . On December 26, 2011, the game, previously called Fire Emblem 3DS , received the final title for Japan, Fire Emblem: Kakusei, during a Nintendo Direct broadcast . During the broadcast, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata also announced that the game would be released in Japan on April 19, 2012 and showed new game scenes.

Speaking at an investor conference on April 27, 2012, Iwata said that Nintendo had no plans to release Awakening outside of Japan at the time. In February 2012, an excerpt from a Nintendo Direct claimed the opposite and stated that Awakening should appear in Europe in 2012. So it was uncertain whether the game would actually come out outside of Japan.

After the Nintendo E3 press conference on June 7, 2012, the President of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, announced a release of the game for North America. An appointment has not yet been announced.

publication

In Japan, Nintendo released Fire Emblem: Awakening on April 19, 2012. In North America, subsidiary Nintendo of America released it on February 4, 2013, while Nintendo of Europe released it in Europe on April 19, 2013. The game can be purchased in stores or as a download from the Nintendo eShop .

Sales figures

According to market research firm Media Create has Fire Emblem: Awakening in the first days after the publication in Japan sold nearly 243,000 times. The game topped the weekly Japan video game charts for the period April 16 to April 22, 2012.

In a speech on DLC in September 2012, Shin Unozawa, chairman of the Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association, mentioned that 1.2 million DLC units for Fire Emblem: Awakening had been downloaded in Japan to date . The income from DLC amounts to 380 million yen (4.8 million dollars), while Nintendo had received a total of 2.4 billion yen (30.6 million dollars) through Awakening .

In North America, Nintendo was able to sell 180,000 units of Fire Emblem: Awakening on the market within the first four weeks. This means that the game already achieved 70% of the total sales of its predecessor during this period. Around a third of the copies sold were purchased in digital form via the eShop.

As of December 31, 2014, 1.79 million copies of the game had been sold worldwide.
