Hyrule Warriors ( Jap. ゼルダ無双 , Zeruda Musō , literally "Zelda Incomparable") is a hack-and-Slay video game from Koei Tecmo and Nintendo for the Wii U . It was released in Europe, Australia and the US in September 2014, while in Japan it was released a month earlier. Hyrule Warriors was developed by Omega Force and Team Ninja, two divisions of Koei Tecmo. The game is a crossover production that follows the gameplay of the Musō series, in particular the Dynasty Warriors series, but is based in the game universe of The Legend of Zelda .

    action

The plot of the game is outside of the official Zelda timeline. The sorceress Cia, who until now has neutrally watched over the balance of the Triforce and herself has the Triforce of Power, falls in love with Link. Links archenemy Ganondorf uses this circumstance and invades Cia's soul in a ghostly form. His goal is to restore his soul, which long ago was split into four parts. Three of them were distributed in space and time and sealed, the fourth banned by the master sword. Ganondorf drives the good out of Cia and causes Cia to be obsessed with the idea of getting closer to Link. She causes a soul portal to be opened in order to build up a monster army. Thereupon she tries with her commanders Volga and Pyroma to attack Hyrule.

When Cia's troops attack Hyrule Castle, Zelda and Impa and Link, who has the Triforce of Courage, are fighting among the Hylian troops, as it later turns out. However, the battle is lost and Princess Zelda disappears. In their search for her, Link and Impa meet the young man Shiek, who joins them, and the good sorceress Lana, who claims to be in the same clan as Cia. Then they try to close the soul portal again. However, Cia sets a trap for them and thus takes the Triforce of Courage from Link and the Triforce of Wisdom from Shiek. Then she uses the Triforce to connect the three time levels from Ocarina of Time , Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword with the current one and opens soul portals there too to take over these regions. Now Ganondorf can reunite the first three parts of his soul.

Link, Impa, Shiek and Lana then split up in order to close the soul portal as quickly as possible. Impa and Shiek take over the time level from Ocarina of Time , Lana that of Twilight Princess and Link that of Skyward Sword . Impa and Shiek join the Goron Darunia and the Zora princess Ruto. After they have defeated Pyroma and Shiek identifies himself as Zelda, they close the soul portal in this time level. Lana, on the other hand, goes to the shadow level, where she meets a fight between the shadow princess Midna and the self-proclaimed shadow king Zanto. There she can get Midna and a beetle collector named Agnetha on her side, defeat Zanto and close the soul portal. Link finally gets to know the sword spirit Phai and together with him defeats Volga, Ghirahim and the exiles and closes the last soul portal.

Then all the heroes meet again and Lana reveals that she is the good soul half of Cia, who was driven out by the spirit of Ganondorf. Now Ganondorf's mind leaves Cia and uses the three recovered fragments of his soul to take on his physical form again. When Ganondorf tries to get the complete Triforce from Cia, Cia sends the Triforce of Courage and the Triforce of Wisdom back to their original owners Link and Zelda, while she uses the Triforce of Power to close Ganondorf. Although she is no longer under Ganondorf's influence, Cia continues to try to win Link for herself.

The heroes then set off for the Temple of the Holy Sword, where the master sword rests, to banish Ganondorf's last soul fragment. Link takes the sword and uses it to drive Cia's monsters out of Hyrule. Link and the other heroes then set out to defeat Cia once and for all. Lana then takes over Cia's place to watch over the Triforce of Power in the future, and the heroes from the other time levels are sent back to their time.

However, due to the removal of the master sword from its base, Ganondorf succeeds in reuniting all parts of his soul. He also lets Zanto and Ghirahim swear allegiance to him. Now the player slips into the role of Ganondorf for the first time. After Ganondorf regained his power and built up a new army, he first attacked Lana to gain the Triforce of Power. Then he sets off for Hyrule Castle to get the other two fragments of the Triforces. After he has succeeded in doing that too, the player changes roles again. Lana summons the heroes from the different time levels again. These now fight Ghirahim and Zanto, while Ganondorf withdraws. Eventually he too is attacked by the heroes and, after a first defeat, turns into the shadow beast Ganon with the help of the Triforce. After this has also been defeated, the Triforce returns to its rightful owners. With his help, Ganon is finally defeated again and then banned with the master sword.

    Gameplay

The game is a combination of the Hack and Slay style of play from Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warrior with the characters from the The Legend of Zelda series from Nintendo. For the first time in Zelda history (with the exception of CD-i titles , which are clearly different from Nintendo’s), the player can control characters other than Link, including evil series characters. Like the protagonists, the opponents and game objects, such as bombs or arrows, as well as most of the final bosses also come mostly from the Zelda series. An essential element of the game is to conquer the bases and support points of the opponents, in which your own armed forces then appear. Each character has different weapons that can be used to perform different combos with combinations of weak and strong attacks. Such weapons are obtained randomly by defeating opponents. Some characters also have several different types of weapons.

The game has different modes. On the one hand there is the legend mode, which is the only one that is unlocked from the start and in which you play through the story. On the other hand, there is an adventure mode in which the map from the first The Legend of Zelda is combined with different missions that are similar to those of the legend mode but are shorter. You have to solve puzzles on the map with the help of item cards won in missions, which change something in the missions. One map section corresponds to one mission.

    Development and publication

Hyrule Warriors was first announced on December 18, 2013 as a collaboration with Koei Tecmo through Nintendo Direct, Nintendo's online format for product information. The then Nintendo President Satoru Iwata stated that the game was not part of the main series, but was a spin-off. The idea for Hyrule Warriors was first introduced by Yosuke Hayashi, Studio Manager of Team Ninja, while a possible crossover between Dynasty Warriors and a Nintendo franchise was being considered with Nintendo . The idea was presented to Eiji Aonuma , the lead developer of the Zelda franchise, using the example of an earlier crossover called One Piece: Pirate Warriors . Then, unlike previous collaborations, Nintendo was confident that Koei Tecmo was capable of developing the game. In developing the game, Aonuma took on the role of a supervisor who oversaw the development of the game. One reason for his great support was that he was pressured to move away from The Legend of Zelda series traditions . Team Ninja, the developer of the Dead or Alive series, then developed the game together with Omega Force, the main developer of the Dynasty Warriors series, who brought in new ideas and supported the development of one-on-one battles .

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2014, Hyrule Warriors was shown publicly with a new trailer in which the characters Agnetha, Lana and Midna as well as the boss Argorok and the opponent Zanto were announced. After E3, more information about the game was posted on the game website over time. Phai, Darunia, Ruto, Shiek and Ghirahim were announced as playable characters and a variant of Gohma as boss. In a Nintendo Direct on August 4, 2014, Zanto and Ghirahim were also confirmed as playable and Ganondorf was confirmed on the one hand as the main opponent and on the other hand as a playable character.

    publication

The first release of Hyrule Warriors took place in Japan on August 14, 2014 via Koei Tecmo, in September it was delivered in Europe, Australia and the USA by Nintendo. In addition to the standard version, there were various special editions. In Europe , Australia and New York City you could get a limited edition with Link's scarf, while in Japan a so-called premium box contained a Triforce watch, an art book and two costume sets for the game characters. There was also a Treasure Box in Japan, which also contained the aforementioned scarf, another costume set and a miniature treasure chest.

    Downloadable content

In Europe, depending on the retailer, different costumes for Link and Zelda were added, which are based on the appearance of the characters in Ocarina of Time , Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword . Players who registered their game with Club Nintendo within a certain time also received costumes for Ganondorf based on Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess .

In addition, a new map for the adventure mode appeared, which is also applied to Majora's Mask. On February 26, 2015, the last DLC of the Hero-of-Hyrule Season Pass was the Boss Package , which includes two new game modes. These are the boss challenges and Ganon's Revenge game mode . The latter is particularly characterized by the fact that you can play the boss Ganon yourself, who differs in large parts from the other characters. Both modes are extensions of the challenge mode.

In addition, a Season Pass , Hero of Hyrule , was released, with which you can get all four DLCs at a discounted price and also a Dark Link costume.

For the release of the 3DS version Hyrule Warriors Legends , the Legends-of-Hyrule Season Pass was released on March 24, 2016 , which contains four more DLCs with additional characters and missions that were released at a later date. The Season Pass is available in three versions. It can only be purchased for the 3DS version, only for the Wii-U version, or for both versions. On September 1, 2016, the Phantom Hourglass & Spirit Tracks Pack was released, containing costumes for the fairy companions, an adventure map, another weapon for Toon-Link, and the Toon-Zelda fighter. The last DLC A Link Between Worlds Pack was released on October 31, 2016. This DLC includes costumes for the fairy companions, an adventure map and two fighters, Ravio and Yuga. The last three Wii U DLCs do not include the costumes for the Fairy Companions.

The characters Linkle, Horror Kid, Toon-Link, Tetra, King Daphnos, and a weapon for Ganondorf, which were not playable in the Wii-U version, are available in the Legends Characters Pack . If you own the Hyrule Warriors Legends , you can get the characters for the Wii U version without purchasing this pack.

    Hyrule Warriors Legends ( Japanese ゼ ル ダ 無双 ハ イ ラ ル オ ー ル ス タ ー ズ , Zeruda Musō Hairaruōrusutāzu , literally: "Zelda Incomparable Hyrule All-Stars") is a remake of Hyrule Warriors for Nintendo 3DS , which was released on March 24, 2016. It is also being developed by Koei Tecmo and Nintendo .

It differs from the Wii U version in that all DLCs are included from the start. In addition, new characters from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker are added, namely Zelda's alter ego Tetra , Toon-Link and the Lion King . In addition, the Horror Kid from Majora's Mask and Linkle , a character based on the idea of a female link and fighting with two crossbows. Likewise, the story is expanded to include a chapter on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker . It was criticized among fans that any additional paid content from Hyrule Warriors in the 3DS version is already available for free without DLCs.
