The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks ( Japanese ゼ ル ダ の 伝 説 大地 の 汽笛 , Zeruda no Densetsu: Daichi no Kiteki , literally: "The Legend of Zelda: Steampipe of the Earth") is a video game from Nintendo for the Nintendo DS portable console . It was published on December 23, 2009 in Japan and was released on December 7, 2009 in the United States and on December 11, 2009 in Europe .

Spirit Tracks is the third Zelda title for a handheld console to be developed within Nintendo, after Link's Awakening and Phantom Hourglass , and the second Zelda game for the DS.

action

Link goes with his trainer to Hyrule Castle, where he is given his train driver's diploma. There he is mailed a letter from Princess Zelda, in which she asks to meet in her private apartment. He goes there and is already expected by Princess Zelda. She tells him that the rails of the gods are gradually disappearing. Therefore he should go with her to the Tower of the Gods to meet the "wise Shiene" there. Along the way, Link, the princess, and Link's instructor who comes with them are attacked and Zelda's body is kidnapped by villains, but her mind escapes. Link and his trainer are passed out by the guard and brought back to Hyrule Castle, where the ghost of Princess Zelda appears after Link wakes up and accompanies him from then on. The two make their way to the tower again and finally arrive at Shiene. This tells the two that the dark demon king is slowly breaking out of his prison in the tower. This can only be prevented if Link can locate the rails of the gods and reactivate them.

Spirit Tracks is the first Zelda game in which Link is directly accompanied and supported by Princess Zelda. Furthermore, it is based on The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and is also related to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker , since the plot has many similarities to the predecessors and allusions are made.

Game mechanics

The game uses the engine of its predecessor Phantom Hourglass and is therefore very similar in terms of game mechanics. The game is operated almost entirely via the Nintendo DS touchscreen. Link can be moved by tapping the stylus on the touchscreen, attacks are carried out either by touching the opponent with the stylus or by swiping the stylus over the touchscreen. For certain utensils such as the boomerang, trajectories of movement can be drawn in a certain radius around the character, while other items such as a bow and arrow or whirlwind can be used at any angle of 360 ° around the character. The internal microphone must also be used for some items.

In the game, the player must seek out several thematically different mazes and defeat their bosses in order to reactivate the rails of the gods.

The tower of the gods represents a special labyrinth. This can only be explored gradually by the player, as it has also disintegrated due to the disappearance of the rails of the gods. After each successfully completed dungeon, a new section of the tower can be explored. In these sections the player can also take control of Zelda, which can penetrate the phantoms already known from the predecessor and control them. Zelda is controlled indirectly in that the player records the trajectory with the stylus and Zelda can perform certain actions on her way to the target, such as attacking opponents or activating switches. Depending on the type of phantom taken over, other action options are available.

Between the individual locations, the player can move by train on the rails of the gods, as well as fulfill transport orders, which in turn unlock further optional rail routes.

Multiplayer mode

In multiplayer mode, up to four players can go on a Force Crystal Hunt as a link. The winner is the player who has the most of these crystals at the end. However, the game is made quite varied by computer-controlled phantoms and items.

technology

Spirit Tracks uses the same cel-shading graphics engine as Phantom Hourglass .

The microphone of the Nintendo DS is used for various puzzles and for playing the panpipe .
