Game description

Action and gameplay

The plot of The Wind Waker HD is similar to that of the original. The protagonist Link lives on Preludes, an island on a great ocean. The kingdom of Hyrule used to be located there, but centuries before the storyline was flooded. The plot begins when Link's sister Aril is kidnapped into the Haunted Bastion by a very large bird, the Mask King. To save his sister, Link joins a group around the pirate Tetra and travels the ocean with the help of a talking boat called the Red Leuenkönig. Later it turns out that Tetra is really Princess Zelda, who the villain Ganondorf is after.

The game's graphics are cel-shaded .

Changes to the original

As announced by the game's producer, The Wind Waker HD has been changed in some details compared to the original game. The controls have been adapted to the Wii-U GamePad. The motion control enabled by the controller is also used, as is the Miiverse social network . According to Aonuma, further adjustments improve the pace of the game.

However, there is no new game content in the form of additional dungeons not included in the original.

development

The producer Eiji Aonuma presents The Wind Waker HD at E³ 2013.

Development process

The Wind Waker HD was developed by the Zelda team, the Software Development Department 3 of Nintendo's Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development (EAD) division. Eiji Aonuma acts as the producer . When the team began developing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , they were faced with many new opportunities as the Wii U became the first Nintendo console to offer HD graphics. So the team first experimented with different HD graphic styles. For this purpose, previous series offshoots such as Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword were tested in HD. Only the results of an HD version of The Wind Waker were able to fully convince the team. Aonuma therefore suggested further developing the HD version and bringing it onto the market.

At the same time as The Wind Waker HD , Aonuma and his team worked on The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for Nintendo 3DS and a new Zelda for the Wii U. According to Aonuma, The Wind Waker HD served the development team as a kind of testing ground for new possibilities to try out on the Wii U and to become familiar with the technology of the console. This experience should go into the completely new game. After the completion of The Wind Waker HD , the team joined the developers of the new title.

The Wind Waker HD took a total of six months to develop . The EAD was supported in the work by external companies who were mainly responsible for the high-resolution textures.

announcement

On January 23, 2013, Eiji Aonuma announced The Wind Waker HD during a Nintendo Direct web show and showed first screenshots of the game. As part of the E3 2013 game fair that took place in June 2013 , Nintendo presented a first trailer for the game. Trade fair visitors could already test the game.

Technical

As with the original title, the graphics are based on cartoon style in combination with cel shading. Creatures mostly have disproportionately large heads, while the landscape is poorly detailed. There are usually intense color contrasts in the surroundings, which is why the transitions between individual objects are not fluid.

In the new edition, the resolution has been improved from 480p to 1080p. New lighting effects have also been added. Therefore all objects now cast a shadow and are themselves a little shaded.

The game also offers uncompressed 5.1 PCM surround sound.

The digital version of the game is approximately 2.6 GB in size.

publication

The Wind Waker HD was first released in Japan on September 26, 2013 . This was followed by North America and Europe , where the game was released on October 4th. In Australia , the game was released a day later.

On October 4th, Nintendo launched a bundle consisting of a Wii-U console in The Wind Waker design and a download code for the game.

During its first week on the Japanese market, around 30,000 units of The Wind Waker HD were sold, according to market research company Media Create. This put the game in seventh place on the weekly Japan charts; it made the worst Japanese debut of any Zelda game . By March 31, 2019, the game had sold 2.3 million times.
