The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes ( Japanese ゼ ル ダ の 伝 説 ト ラ イ フ ォ ー ス 3 銃 士 , Zeruda no Densetsu: Toraifōsu San-jūshi , literally: The Legend of Zelda: The Three Triforce Musketeers ) is a video game developed under the direction of Nintendo of the genre action-adventure for the handheld console Nintendo 3DS . In June 2015 it was presented to the public for the first time at the Electronic Entertainment Expo ( E3 ) and received the Game Critics Awards as the best handheld / mobile game. It was launched worldwide in October 2015.

The game is the 18th title in The Legend of Zelda series . As is typical of the series, the player takes on the role of the hero Link, who sets off with two companions to break a witch's curse. The action begins a few years after the events of A Link Between Worlds .

The video game was developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development and other studios under the direction of Hiromasa Shikata . The idea for Tri Force Heroes dates back to 2009, but planning only began in 2013 with the release of A Link Between Worlds .

Game critics judged Tri Force Heroes very differently: While most of them praised the three- player game, they rated the single player mode much more negatively. Therefore, the game is one of the worst rated titles in the series.

    action

Tri Force Heroes takes place in the official timeline of the Zelda series some time after the events of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and takes place in the fictional fashion-oriented land of Textilia . The player experiences the story from the point of view of one of the game's three protagonists, who go on adventures together to break a curse. The figure controlled by the player is a link from the previous game, the other two are of unknown origin. Alternatively, Link can leave alone with two doll-like doppelgangers.

The princess of the Kingdom of Textilia, Princess Rüschlinde, is admired for her fashion style by all but one witch from Lumpenland called Lady Maude. Lady Maude curses the princess, who is robbed of her beautiful clothes and from then on has to wear an ugly black full body suit that she cannot take off. The princess then locks herself permanently in her rooms out of shame. Their disappearance plunges the country into mourning and the inhabitants no longer dare to put on nice clothes for fear of being cursed too. Desperate about the princess and the state of the country, her father and king of the country recalls the legend of the totem heroes. He then founds a troop of heroes , called the witch hunters , and has the heroes described in the legend searched everywhere.

The game begins when Link, a young man, learns one day of the king's request for the heroes of the legend, whose description fits him. Encouraged by other residents, who also see him as a suitable candidate for the king's petition, he goes to the country's castle. Once there, Count Schnöselschick, the commandant of the witch hunters, recognizes that the description of the legend applies to Link and accepts him into the troop. As a rule of the troop, he explains to Link that it is only allowed to go out in a team of three. Before Link makes his way to Lumpenland, he learns from the seamstress, Madame Courture, that she is the witch's sister and that she is able to tailor a dress to break the curse. To do this, however, they need certain materials that would be in Lumpenland. With two other heroes, Link sets off to Lumpenland, where after many fights in different places they finally find the materials they are looking for and the witch and defeat them.

Back in Textilia, Link receives the lady dress made from the materials from Madame Courture, with which Link Princess Rüschlinde is freed from the curse so that she can show herself again to the people. The king and princess celebrate the totem hero with the citizens of Textilia. Back at the castle, Link receives the full-body stocking from the princess and the king as a reward for his actions, in which Rüschlinde was forced to linger by the curse of Lady Maude. In addition, the king asks Link to continue using his skills for the good of Textilia.

    Game mechanics

Tri Force Heroes is a game of the action-adventure genre , the game mechanics of which is mainly designed for the joint exploration of defined play areas. To do this, the three characters have to solve puzzles together and fight opponents. Depending on the selected game mode , the player takes control of one or three of the characters. The player usually sees and controls this from a bird's eye view . In the single player game mode , the player takes over all three characters, while in the multiplayer mode he only takes over one character and the other two are taken over by two human players.

In addition to the main storyline, which can only be played alone or in groups, arena battles are available for two or three players. In contrast to the main storyline, the player does not follow a story, instead everything revolves around a battle of strength between the players in a fight against each other.

Multiplayer games can take place both online and locally . In order to play the game locally in multiplayer mode, at least one of the players must own the game. The other two can download the game from the game owner's network, but then play with some restrictions, such as limited storage.

    Game world

The Lumpenland can be traveled through the Triforce

The game world is typically divided into different thematic areas, which include a river landscape, an ice landscape, a volcanic landscape, a desert, a fortress, the sky, a forest and a cemetery. In contrast to most other Zelda games, the game world is not connected, but consists of separate areas. These can be visited from the Royal Palace of Textilias, which acts as a hub together with the neighboring city . The cross-game Triforce represents a teleportation platform for the journey from the castle to the areas and within the areas from one level section to the next level section Triforce ask. Also typical of the series, each area offers specific tasks tailored to the topic.

There are four different levels in each area . This means that the game contains a total of 32 levels to be mastered. To successfully complete a level, you have to pass through four puzzle chambers and solve the puzzles contained therein and defeat opponents. In some levels the player faces a strong boss in the last puzzle chamber . After completing a level, a new level can be selected from the list of unlocked levels and played.

    Puzzles and fights

An exemplary real totem (here made of wood), as it can form two or three of the figures in the game. The bottom controls the movement; the top one can use items.

Riddles usually have to be solved in conjunction with all three characters. Some opponents also demand that the characters work together. For solving certain puzzles or defeating special opponents, special equipment is often necessary. For exploring higher levels, solving certain puzzles or defeating special opponents, it is also necessary to regularly form a totem . For this purpose, depending on the required height of the totem, two or three characters have to be stacked on top of one another. Equipment can only be used by the top player in the totem. There are puzzles and opponents that require a combination of a certain totem height and a player at the top with suitable equipment in order to be solved or defeated. The difficulty of the puzzles and the opponents in new levels increases in the course of the game and becomes greater as the player progresses in the plot.

The communication and coordination for puzzles and battles between the players, which is usually necessary in multiplayer, is achieved through the use of eight existing emoticons . For example, a player can use the emoticon “Here!” To tell the other players that they should come to him. End bosses, special opponents who can only be defeated with the right tactics, are typical of the series. In Tri Force Heroes , bosses require particularly close interaction between all players through intensive communication and coordination.

If the player takes over all three figures in single player mode, only one figure is active and the other two stand motionless in their last position. During this time, however, the two inactive characters are also invulnerable. In order to be able to complete the puzzles and fights, a regular change of the active figure is necessary because, as in multiplayer, the figures can only complete the level together.

All three characters share the life energy , which typically consists of a certain number of hearts. These decrease when one is injured by opponents, has contact with certain elements in the game such as fire or falls into an abyss, by a heart. The loss of all hearts means that the entire level has to be started all over again. Only the use of a fee that may be in the luggage prevents this and means that only the current level section has to be started from the beginning.

    equipment

The main weapon of the players is a sword that everyone carries with them at all times. In addition, specific objects (so-called items ) such as bombs , bows and arrows , water sticks or a boomerang can be collected in the various levels . These can also be necessary to solve the puzzles and to defeat certain opponents. However, the players are not allowed to keep items they have collected after completing the respective level and must instead find the items in this level each time they visit again.

After successfully completing a level, however, players receive materials that they can keep permanently. From these, the seamstress can create new costumes that, when worn, give the character special skills. These can, for example, lead to the player shooting three arrows at the same time instead of just one arrow or walking on lava . There are a total of 36 costumes with special abilities in the game, although additional content that can be purchased online later is not included. However, the costumes only make the game easier and, like the other items, are not necessary for the progress of the level. In addition to the option of receiving materials directly, the player also has the option of buying some materials from vendors using rubies collected in the levels. Rubies represent the currency in Tri Force Heroes, as in all games in the series, and can be obtained in different values by defeating opponents or by destroying vases, bushes or the like. In addition, once the player has made a certain progress in the game, he can tackle special missions in which he can obtain rare materials that he cannot find anywhere else in the game.

    Arena battles

Fights in the arena can be fought in twos or threes and are not necessary for progress in the game. The players only fight for themselves and therefore do not share any life energy. To win an arena battle, you have to take less damage than your opponents have to take in a set time. The arenas come in different shapes and sizes and are thematically located in the areas of the game world of the main plot. There are eight different arenas to choose from, which, like the levels in the main story, are chosen by vote. The winner in the arena will be rewarded with rare materials for new costumes that cannot be found in the single player.

The principle of the equippable items is identical to that of the main story. Players can also choose one of the costumes available to them before the fight. The sword and objects that they can also collect in the arena are available to them for fighting.

    development

    overview

The idea for Tri Force Heroes had Hiromasa Shikata for the first time in 2009 during the development of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks he worked in as a game designer. Shikata wanted to develop a multiplayer Zelda game himself . In an interview he stated:

“[We] had wanted to do more multiplayer Zelda… and in [Spirit Tracks] there's a portion where you control the Phantoms. That element really intrigued me and brought out the idea that I wanted to try multiplayer as well. "

“[We] wanted to do more multiplayer Zelda [games] ... and in [Spirit Tracks] there is a place where you control the phantoms. This element fascinated me and gave me the idea that I also wanted to try making multiplayer [games]. "

    - Hiromasa Shikata : Interview with Polygon

Shikata's interest in developing a multiplayer Zelda himself, however, rested from then on until the development of the next Zelda game A Link Between Worlds , in which he took on the role of director for the first time in his life.

After the completion of A Link Between Worlds , the planning, conception and subsequent development began. Most of the planning was done by the Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development studio , a division of Nintendo that merged with another Nintendo division to form Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development shortly before release . In contrast to the usual process for developing Zelda games, this time there was a dedicated team that only took care of Tri Force Heroes . This was to prevent the game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , which is also in development, from being delayed. The conception and programming was carried out together with the external studios Grezzo , Systems Research & Development and Nintendo's own 1-UP studio . The entire development was led by Hiromasa Shikata, who took on the role of director for the second time in a row, and Eiji Aonuma in the role of producer. Grezzo, who already had experience with Zelda games on the Nintendo 3DS, planned and developed much of the game.

The game's soundtrack was written for the second time after A Link Between Worlds by video game composer Ryō Nagamatsu of the Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development Sound Group . As is typical in series , Zelda games do not include voice output . Only the exclamations of the characters are set to music.

    Design choices

The idea for Tri Force Heroes that Link could wear different costumes in the game hadn't appeared in the series before. To be sure that gamers would embrace the new element, Nintendo asked people in the US and Japan for their opinion. The consensus of the survey was that the respondents had no problem with costumes for Link, which cleared the way for implementation. In addition to the positive effect for the developers of allowing the players more variations in their play style through the costumes with their special effects, it was hoped that the game would also be more interesting for girls.

When the question of the communication between the players arose, the studio decided against voice-based communication and the use of emoticons. This was to prevent players who were more advanced in the game from being able to reveal the solution to the puzzles to the less advanced.

At the beginning of the development, no single player mode was planned, as Hiromasa Shikata wanted to concentrate solely on the three-player multiplayer mode. Only later did producer Eiji Aonuma come up with the proposal and people began to think about a single player mode. Ultimately, they had a solution with the controllable dolls, which then found their way into the finished game.

    technology

The game can be played on a Nintendo 3DS or a Nintendo 2DS and is located on a Nintendo 3DS game module or, if purchased online from Nintendo eShop , as a download in the console's internal memory.

As a game engine in the predecessor is A Link Between Worlds used engine used. As with the predecessor, the game world and the game characters are calculated and displayed in real time using three-dimensional polygons . It is also possible to have the game displayed on the Nintendo 3DS either in 2D or autostereoscopically in 3D , as usual . As in the predecessor, the refresh rate was 60 frames per second, which should ensure a smooth game display. Compared to its predecessor, however, the camera perspective has been adjusted a little differently so that all three players are better visible on one screen at the same time.

The upper and lower screens of Nintendo 3DS are used to display different information. On the upper screen, the game world is displayed with the game characters and the opponents. There is also the heart bar, the magic bar and the number of rubies. Information on all players can be found on the lower touch screen . In the single player mode the active figure can also be selected there. There is also information about the level currently being played and the number of lifesaving fairies available. All eight available emoticons are displayed in large square fields, which can also be activated with one touch. The activated emoticon will then appear on the top screen of the other players.

    publication

    announcement

Tri Force Heroes was presented to the public for the first time on June 16, 2015 at the Nintendo E3 Digital Event , an Internet event hosted by Nintendo parallel to the US computer games fair E3 2015. The autumn of the same year was given as the publication period. In the course of the presentation, the focus on the multiplayer, the totem function and the interchangeable costumes were announced as the first details for the upcoming game.

A few days later , further details about the game were announced , also as part of the Nintendo E3 Digital Event . It was said for the first time that the plot cannot be played in pairs. Instead, the option of being able to play the game alone was given up. One-on-one or one-on-all arena battles available for two or three players have been introduced as Colloseum fashion .

At the German trade fair for interactive consumer electronics gamescom in 2015 in Cologne, the final release date for October 23, 2015 was finally announced.

    Launch

The game was finally released in Japan on October 22, 2015. The following day, Tri Force Heroes was also released in Europe, the United States and Canada, and on October 24, 2015 in Australia. The release was accompanied by the global touring concert series The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses , which in the pre-release period was under the sign of Tri Force Heroes .

A few weeks after the release, an extensive update was announced for December 3, 2015, which includes a new area to explore and other innovations. The new area contains 30 levels per area instead of the usual 4 levels. Another innovation that the update offers, among other things, is a new matchmaking system, which should match players when looking for players with players who have a similar style of play.

The next update was released on December 22nd, 2015, which, in addition to some bug fixes, added so-called hero points to the game. These are given to players in multiplayer mode for successfully completing a level for which they did not vote in the level selection, or in single player mode for completing special missions. For a certain number of points, they can be exchanged for additional costume materials at the vendor, which gives players another opportunity to get missing materials. With the help of the hero points, an incentive is to be created that players do not quit the game prematurely because they had not voted for the level.

    Sales figures

According to market research firm GfK Chart-Track , Tri Force Heroes reached eleventh place on the recorded video game charts in the UK in the first week that ended the day after the game was released. In the following week, sales there dropped to 32nd place. In Japan, Tri Force Heroes debuted at number 1 on the video game charts with approximately 54,000 units sold. Despite the placement, the copies sold were not even a quarter of the sales figures of the predecessor within the same period. In North America, according to the market research company NPD Group , Tri Force Heroes sold approximately 83,000 times in October 2015. The predecessor sold significantly more frequently in the same period with around 280,000 copies.

The website VGChartz estimated total sales up to November 28, 2015 in North America at 220,000 copies (44 percent share), in Europe at 140,000 copies (27.9 percent share), in Japan at 110,000 copies (21.3 percent share) and in the rest of the world to 30,000 copies (6.7 percent share). A total of 490,000 copies were sold.

On February 2, 2016, Nintendo announced the current worldwide sales figures for its games and put them at Tri Force Heroes at 1.08 million.

Tri Force Heroes received mixed reviews. At GameRankings , a media ratings website, the game received an average rating of 72 percent. At Metacritic , another database for media ratings, it achieved an average rating of 73 out of 100 points.

Patrick Mittler from the German-language computer game magazine GamePro especially praised the multiplayer, which is "great fun for three people". The story is rather insignificant compared to other Zelda games. The communication via emoticons is okay, otherwise the too simple puzzles would become even easier. The fun factor of the game is comparable to the New Super Mario titles. Since Tri Force Heroes is very puzzling in contrast to those, the replay value is kept within limits. A negative thing is the forced repetition of the levels for collecting the materials, since the puzzles offer less tension the second time and at the latest from the third repetition would degenerate into "arduous repetition work". In this context, it was also rated negatively that if the players do not agree on the level selection, this will be decided by chance and you will be forced to play certain levels. The single player mode was rated as significantly less fun, and it also suffered from the problem that controlling all three characters at the same time could degenerate into “pretty tricky finger exercises”.

The game website GameSpot gave Tri Force Heroes one of the worst ratings with five out of ten possible points. Writer Mike Mahardy described the game as a drastic departure from the tradition of the series. He justifies the evaluation by saying that the game sometimes shows real potential, with the clever design even competing with the best titles in the series, but these moments are rare and the time in between is very long. Nintendo may have told familiar Zelda stories before , but this game takes it even further. It tells the story of fashion gurus and designer suits along with eccentric personalities and fashion tips. At first he was still fascinated by the bizarre plot, but this disappeared over time due to poorly written characters and “unbelievably” bad plot points.

Jose Otero of IGN game website concluded that the game had everything that makes great co-op multiplayer . These are levels that require teamwork, clever game mechanics and a lot of slapstick comedy that emerges when you try to solve the puzzles together with friends. The game is most fun when the levels require each of the players to play a certain role in order to advance. The boss fights in particular show what makes Tri Force Heroes great thanks to the intense cooperation required between the players . In his opinion, the game also successfully combines the perspective and style of play from the Zelda game A Link to the Past and the items from the classic Zelda games with the new totem feature.

Matt Peckham of the US American Time magazine described the game as the strangest Zelda game in decades. It feels both unique in terms of the entire Zelda franchise and complex in terms of the approach to the game through the choice between the three game modes. But that doesn't mean that all game modes work equally well. He finds that certain puzzles are poorly suited to solve in single player mode. Nevertheless, he is fascinated that Nintendo has managed to integrate three such different experiences into one game.

    Awards

In the run-up to its release, the game was honored with three awards. The E3 jury awarded the game the best handheld / mobile game award at the Game Critics Awards 2015. IGN awarded its own awards based on the games presented at E3 2015. Tri Force Heroes won IGN's Best of E3 2015 Award in the category of best 3DS game . At gamescom 2015, Tri Force Heroes was awarded the gamescom Award 2015 in the category Best Mobile Game (incl. Handheld, iOS, Android, Windows).

    Classification in the Zelda series

Tri Force Heroes differs greatly from other offshoots of the series in its game structure and sequence. There is no open upper world, no expandable heart bar, no items hidden in levels, no backtracking for solving cross-room puzzles and no empty bottles, which are essential for storing certain objects in most games in the series. Princess Zelda, who gave the series its name, does not appear in the game either. However, this is not the first time that she has not made an appearance.

The pieces of equipment that play a major role in every Zelda game are only available to a very limited extent. Instead of the player always looking for new items in the course of the plot and adding them to his collection, the players have to pick up items again in each level. As a result, the series-typical inventory for managing and selecting the items does not exist. Likewise, Link's standard equipment shield , which was present in many predecessors and with which he can repel attacks by his opponents, is missing .

The most important object in the other games in the series, the Triforce , has only a very subordinate role as a teleportation platform in Tri Force Heroes , despite the similarity of the title to the object. In other games, however, it represents the greatest power in the world. This power, left behind on earth by the three goddesses who created the world, has the ability there to fulfill the owner's every wish and thus bring the world into light or destruction to fall.

While most Zelda games are designed entirely for single player and do not contain any multiplayer at all, Tri Force Heroes is primarily aimed at multiplayer. Although there have been other multiplayer Zelda games like Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures , this focused, however, as the name suggests ( Engl. Four Swords , translated: Four Swords ), on the interaction of four players. Although Four Swords Adventures , unlike Four Swords , also offers a single player mode, it works a little differently than in Tri Force Heroes . When Four Sword Adventures is played alone, the other three characters follow the player in a row at every turn.

Due to the many differences between Tri Force Heroes and other parts of the series, some publications refer to it as an offshoot (also known as a spin-off ) of the series. Due to the official classification in the chronology of the series, it is not an offshoot, but part of the main series. Following the chronology, the next part is The Legend of Zelda from 1986, the first part of the series.
