This War of Mine is a computer game from 11 Bit Studios that was released on November 14, 2014. It is a 2½D survival simulation in which you control a small group of people who are trying to survive in the ruins of a city that fell victim to war and is now in chaos. The city is mostly occupied by other survivors, the military and bandits trying to make the best of their situation. On January 29, 2016, a version with additional missions and characters for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was released under the title This War of Mine: The Little Ones . In November 2018, a version of the game for Nintendo Switch was released as This War of Mine: Complete Edition .

Gameplay

The game throws the player into the action relatively unprepared. A short text tells how the protagonists came together. These are determined randomly at the start of the game, or from version 1.2 also manually. Then you can begin to search the ruins in which the survivors have found refuge for usable materials, clear rubble aside and produce the first objects for survival. The creation of better items uses larger amounts of resources and takes longer. At the end of each day it is possible to assign activities such as keeping watch, sleeping or looting to the protagonists. In the latter, the player takes control of a protagonist and can visit a place in the area, for example a family house or a hospital. As the game progresses, new and more closely guarded locations are added. In doing so, the player sometimes encounters non-player characters who help the player, ask for help, enable the trade in items or are hostile.

The aim of the game is to survive until the war is finally over.

Extensions

On June 1, 2016, the DLC "The Little Ones", which was already included in the versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One , was released, in which, among other things, children were inserted as playable characters, also for PC.

In November 2017 the first of three story DLCs was released with “Father's Promise”, in November 2018 the second with “The Last Broadcast” and in August 2019 the third with “Fading Embers”.

production

Reviews

“11 Bit Studios is trying to create something that leaves you with a lasting, emotional understanding of what warzone survival truly entails. It's ambitious, but so far the ideals aren't let down by the execution: it is aiming for a very, very difficult balance, and at least in the preview, is hitting it dead on. “The 11-bit studios are trying to create something that leaves one with a lasting, emotional understanding of what surviving in a war zone really entails. This is ambitious, but so far these ideals have not been neglected by the implementation: The goal is a very, very difficult balance, but at least the preliminary version hits the target completely. The developers have built something in which it is possible to survive, but only exactly that. "

- Mary Hamilton : The Guardian

“Building beds, distilling vodka, sacrificing friends to save family members. […] This War of Mine and is not only tough and direct, but also a self-contained economic simulation with production cycles like DayZ . This War of Mine is much more sober and minimalistic than the first trailer suggested. But the concept already looks very exciting because we have to bring a surprising amount of technical knowledge, combine and tinker with it. Why? Because the real civilians in bombed-out cities have no plans on how to build beds, stoves or stills, we first have to acquire this know-how. Interestingly enough, the game doesn't want to be a moral index finger at all, but rather depict an actual state: We at war, what to do? "

Financial success

The game was also a great financial success for 11 Bit Studios. The production of the game cost around € 500,000, the money was brought back in sales after two days. The cost of an 11-bit share rose from € 2 to € 20 overnight. By mid-2015, before it was released on Android and iOS, This War of Mine had grossed € 2.5 to 3.5 million. The company is in the best financial condition it has ever been in, said Karol Zajaczkowski, press spokesman for 11 Bit Studios.
