, Please Papers ( German  papers, please ) is a 2013 published Indie - simulation game for Windows , macOS , Linux , and for the iPad .

action

The player slips into the role of a nameless citizen of the totalitarian, fictional state Arstotzka . At the beginning of the game the state assigns the job of a checker at a border crossing to the player , at which he must decide every day from now on whether travelers are allowed to pass the border crossing or not. Not only do the entry conditions change almost daily, the mysterious EZIC society and Arstotzka's secret service also try to influence the player and use him for their own purposes.

Gameplay

At the beginning of each day, the player receives up-to-date instructions as to which travelers are allowed to cross the border crossing under which conditions. The player must then check the required documents of each traveler and discover forged or expired documents. A rulebook and daily instructions are available to the player for this purpose. As the game progresses, additional options such as a rudimentary body scanner and weapons to shoot at assassins and border refugees are added. At the end of the shift, the player is rewarded for each correctly admitted or refused entry; fines are imposed on the player for unlawfully refused or approved entry. Additional income can be generated in part through bribes and bonuses for arresting people and shooting at border violators. The money earned must be used to pay for rent, heating, food and, if necessary, medication for up to five family members. If the player earns too little to cover basic needs, family members can get sick and even die. As the game progresses, minor improvements to the control point will also be available for purchase.

Depending on how the player behaves, one of 20 possible game ends is reached.

Papers, Please received consistently good to very good reviews in the trade press . The extraordinary game principle, which confronts difficult moral decisions, was praised. The graphics and sound were mostly described as out of date, albeit consistent. The regular press, radio and television also took part in the game:

“There is no time for humanity. Every little mistake is noticed. I'm being monitored and more and more nervous. And understand more and more how people can act against their own humanity. How they betray themselves and others. How they can see no alternative. And how they can enjoy something as simple as comparing passports at the same time. "

- Carsten Görig, Spiegel Online

“That's why“ Papers, Please ”is a great work. It dares not give us what we usually seek: rewards and the feeling of being the greatest. Rather, it confronts us with a perfidious arbitrary regime and holds up a mirror to us. That is uncomfortable, but important. "

“You don't have fun stamping in the classic sense, but it doesn't get boring - much like a good television documentary on a serious topic. 'Papers, Please' is a fascinating experience and really clever entertainment. "

In March 2014, in an interview for the BBC as part of the BAFTA Video Games Awards , Pope announced that the game had sold over half a million copies. At the BAFTA Games Awards, Pope won the Best Game 2014 award in the Strategy and Simulation category. The game was also nominated in the categories “Game of the Year”, “Game Design” and “Game Innovation”.
