Speed Runners is a multiplayer - racing game , which of Double Dutch Games developed and tinyBuild was published. Originally a free web browser game called SpeedRunner and later an Xbox 360 game called SpeedRunner HD on the Xbox Live Arcade , SpeedRunners was released in Early Access on August 26, 2013 on Steam and as a full version on April 19, 2016 . SpeedRunners was released as a Games with Gold title on Xbox One in June 2017 . On February 25, 2019, an app for beta testers of the free iOS version appeared in the Australian iTunes Store , which was then released for everyone with the first update on March 28, 2019. On January 23, 2020, the game was released in the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo Switch . In July 2015, it was recognized as an eSport by the Electronic Sports League . However, due to the declining activity, the SpeedRunners area ended on August 28, 2016 with the last Community Cup.

Gameplay

SpeedRunners is played as a fast side-scroller . Players compete with one another to overtake their opponents with grappling hooks , power-ups and interactive environments. The screen moves with the player who is currently at the top. If you fall back far enough from the screen, the players will end up dying from the players who are still on the screen. As the game progresses, they gain experience based on their performance. If the player gets enough experience points, he will rise to a higher level, which will unlock new power-ups, levels, characters and ways to change the appearance.

reception

Kotaku's Alex Jones described SpeedRunners as "a competitive multiplayer Mario that Nintendo should have made." PC Gamer's Emanuel Maiberg said it was a "fully realized idea" with the exception of "the occasional bug and some gross artifacts." Rock, Paper, Shotgun's Ben Barrett praised the simplicity of the game.

SpeedRunners won the “Gamer's Voice Award” at the 2015 SXSW Gaming Award , in 2014 the “Best Multiplayer Game Award” from Indie DB and was nominated for the “Best PC / Console Game” category at the 2012 Dutch Game Awards.
