Moschtschny (Russian: Мощный , until 1951 Лавенсари ; Finnish: Lavansaari ; Swedish: Lövskär ; Estonian: Lavassaar ) is an island in the Gulf of Finland . It is located in the Russian Oblast Leningrad around 130 km west of Saint Petersburg and 40 km east of the island of Gogland . The area of the island is 13.9 km². The Finnish population (approx. 1100 inhabitants) was completely evacuated during the winter war . Subsequently, the island became a Soviet (now Russian) naval base. In the siege of Leningrad , the island was fought over, but remained in Soviet possession.
The island belonged to Finland until 1940 .
