The Oculus Rift S is a VR headset with inside-out tracking that was introduced by Oculus VR , a subsidiary of Facebook Inc. , on March 20, 2019. The headset replaces the Oculus Rift .

The Rift S uses an LCD panel with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels and a maximum refresh rate of 80  Hz .

Tracking system

For the tracking system, the Rift S uses what is known as “inside-out tracking”. This makes it possible to dispense with the two or three trackers of the first rift that had to be placed in the room. The device uses five cameras installed on the outside to track the room. The Rift S can also display the video feed from the cameras on the screen. Oculus calls this feature "Passthrough +" and claims that their software solution called "Asynchronous SpaceWarp" provides a comfortable experience with minimal depth distortion.

Audio

The Rift S does not have integrated headphones like those found in the Rift CV1. Instead, stereo speakers are built into the headband. According to critics, their quality leaves something to be desired. A jack plug for your own headphones is also available.

Redesigned Oculus Touch Controllers

Oculus Rift S uses the same controllers as the Oculus Quest, which was released at the same time .

criticism

Palmer Luckey , a co-founder of Oculus VR and co-designer of the first Rift, said in an article that he couldn't comfortably use the Oculus Rift S because the device would not support its IPD (pupil-to-pupil distance) of 70mm .
