Beat Saber is a music game by the Czech game developer Beat Games , which was released on May 1, 2018 in Early Access on the Steam platform for Windows and supports the virtual reality devices Oculus Rift , Oculus Quest and HTC Vive . On 20 November 2018, extended version with new was songs and game modes for the PlayStation 4 issued, which the head-mounted display of PlayStation VR uses. As announced in November 2019, the developer studio and the rights to the game were taken over by Facebook and incorporated into Oculus Studios .
Gameplay
Beat Saber is a rhythm-based music game for virtual reality devices in which the player is asked to chop up colored cubes in time with the music, which appear from the background at different speeds. To do this, the player uses two lightsabers in the colors blue and red and has to hit and split the cubes with the corresponding color at the right moment. Pay attention to the direction of impact, which is indicated on the cube with an arrow. The game is made more difficult by approaching bombs, which must not be hit, and obstacles that the player must avoid by crouching or walking to the side. Every hit of the color-matching cube in time with the music is rewarded with points and the high score is saved in a global leaderboard. The concept is compared as a mixture of the gameplay of Guitar Hero or Rock Band and Fruit Ninja and described as easy to learn and at the same time exhilarating.
The game is controlled with the input devices of the Oculus Rift , Oculus Quest and HTC Vive or on the PlayStation 4 with the PlayStation Move controllers. The music, which can be assigned to the genre of electronic dance music and, according to test reports, has catchy tunes, was composed especially for the game by the musician Jaroslav Beck. In addition to the ten songs contained in the basic version of the game, the repertoire is regularly expanded through expansion packs that also contain music from other styles.

Reviews
|
Most of the reviews from the international trade press were positive. After appearing in Early Access in early May 2018, Beat Saber was the best-rated game on the Steam platform within a week . Particular emphasis is placed on the simplicity of the game principle, which even inexperienced players can quickly grasp and implement. Furthermore, the strong motivation to set new records for points is described as a driving factor that can sometimes push the player into a trance-like flow . One point of criticism is the small selection of songs in the basic version.
"Conclusion:» From the interface to the graphics to the subtleties of the game mechanics: Beat Saber looks mature, round and plays flawlessly. «"
“Conclusion:» Beat Saber fetzt! Despite or perhaps because of the simple mechanics, this is mainly due to the great feel in combination with the great songs, which are almost perfectly tailored to the action and sometimes sweaty choreographies. Especially in higher levels of difficulty you are really challenged and striving for perfection as well as the fight for places on the online best list initially ensure sufficient motivation. «“
“Conclusion:“ For a moment, I was afraid that I would regret buying Beat Saber quickly - only so few songs, that can't be motivating for long. The concern was unjustified: The songs play very differently on the different levels of difficulty, the highscore hunt in the circle of friends works perfectly and in the trance-like game flow there is little time to feel bored anyway. «“
