Fruit Ninja is a skill - and Arcade - computer game , which of Halfbrick has been developed and the first time on 21 April 2010 for iOS was released and later for other smartphone - operating systems such as Android , Windows Phone , Bada and Symbian and Web applications was published. Later, in addition to the touchscreen variants, work was also carried out on those for motion control and virtual reality .

In the game, the player has to cut up fruit that is thrown into the air by sliding his fingers over the touchscreen of the device or by using motion controls using arms and hands. It offers several game modes , leaderboards and a multiplayer mode .

Gameplay

Functionality and control

The task in Fruit Ninja is to cut up fruits that appear at irregular intervals by means of a cutting movement with a virtual blade. Depending on the operating system and peripherals, the touchscreen , mouse or motion control is used for this. For each fruit caught, the player receives one point.

The aim is to achieve as many points as possible in the given time. However, bombs will also appear on the field that will explode if attempted to break them apart (unless bomb dropping is used). If the player does not manage to cut three fruits before they have disappeared, a game over occurs .

Additional points are awarded for cutting multiple fruits with one stroke (called “ combos ”) and players can use additional fingers ( multi-touch screen ) to make multiple moves at the same time. Upon reaching points that are a multiple of one hundred (i.e. 100, 200, 300, etc.), the player gains an extra life, unless a piece of fruit has already been missed.

fruit

The standard fruits include apples , strawberries , bananas and coconuts .

Special pomegranates are occasionally thrown onto the screen in Classic and Arcade modes . Players can cut these multiple times to get extra points. Similarly, an extremely rare dragon fruit sometimes appears in Classic mode, which when sliced will give players fifty points. Arcade mode adds special bananas that have unique bonuses such as doubling points for a limited time and increasing the amount of fruit on the screen or slowing the movement of all fruit for a short time. Star fruits are the currency for power-ups.

Game modes

Fruit Ninja can be played in the following game modes :

  • Classic : The normal game mode in which the player plays until he has lost due to missed fruit or bombs. The degree of difficulty and speed increases with the number of points.
  • Zen : Here you have to collect as many points as possible in a minute and a half and no bombs appear.
  • Arcade : Here you can let off steam for a minute and try to get as high a score as possible. Special bananas are added to the standard fruit, which have unique bonuses like doubling points for a limited time and increasing the amount of fruit on the screen or slowing the movement of all fruit for a short time. There are also bombs that subtract 10 points from the player's score.
  • Survival : More and more fruit cannons are putting the player under pressure to survive as long as possible (only in the VR version).
  • Festival mode : Here the player can compete against the artificial intelligence of the game by paying with gold apples to challenge an AI player.

Game updates

Gutsu's Cart

When Fruit Ninja was celebrating its second birthday, Halfbrick released an update with a new feature called Gutsu's Cart , which consists of two characters, a pig named Truffle and a human named Gutsu. In the different modes of the game, the star fruit can be earned to buy items in Gutsu's shopping cart. There are three items for sale that are used in the game:

  • Berry Blast explodes sliced strawberries and gives the player five extra points,
  • Peachy Times ensures that if you cut a peach in Zen or Arcade mode, the player gets two extra seconds.
  • Bomb Deflect ensures that the player can deflect bombs if they accidentally cut them. A star fruit can be obtained after each game and develops proportionally to the score or by cutting the semi-rare star fruit.

Power-ups, items, computer opponents and mini-games

In Fruit Ninja's fifth anniversary update, Gutsu's Cart was removed and replaced with a power-up menu that used star fruit to purchase the three power-ups in the game. Berry Blast power ups were set at 120 star fruits, Peachy Times power ups at 100 star fruits and Bomb Deflect power ups at 80 star fruits. In addition, certain dōjōs and blades had different effects related to the Classic, Arcade and Zen game modes.

A new festival mode was also added, where players could compete against the game's artificial intelligence by paying gold apples to challenge an AI player. Were also mini-games added to the skills of newcomers and experts alike to challenge.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer gameplay is supported on iOS devices through Apple's Game Center application. It enables competitive gameplay and offers leaderboards and achievements. In multiplayer matches, the player's blades and fruits are highlighted in blue, while those of the opponent are highlighted in red. Fruits outlined in white are considered neutral and can be claimed by both players. Fruits outlined in white are worth three points. Players must slice their own fruit while avoiding their opponent's fruit. The iPad version of the game offers improved graphics and also supports local multiplayer mode, where the screen is split in half and each player controls half of the screen. Players can also share their high score via OpenFeint , Twitter and Facebook ( social gaming ).

Development and publication

Conception and Marketing

Luke Muscat, lead designer for Fruit Ninja, said that he found the uniqueness of the touch-screen platforms and the short development cycle as a motivation to develop the game for Halfbrick. The game itself emerged from a brainstorming session and was then further developed and marketed as an indie game through several sales channels. Phil Larsen stated that the rapid release of iOS applications required a different marketing strategy. A top title in the charts could drop and be forgotten after just a few days without a proper backup plan. It is therefore important to remain attractive to (potential) customers through updates and press releases.

Smartphone and tablet success

The game was first released on April 21, 2010 for iPod touch and iPhone devices and was also released for the iPad on July 12, 2010 . A version for Android devices followed on September 17, 2010, and a version for Windows Phone devices on December 22, 2010 . On November 2, 2010, an arcade mode for Fruit Ninja that adjusted the game dynamics was announced and was released two days later.

In December 2010, free lite versions of Fruit Ninja and Fruit Ninja HD were released for iOS devices and serve as demo versions of the game. The game was also released for Windows Phone 7 on December 22, 2010 . On January 21, 2011, an update to the Android version of the game was released that added arcade mode, leaderboards, and an ice blade to the game.

In March 2011 versions for Samsung's Bada and Nokia's Symbian were released. A spin-off edition of the game, titled Fruit Ninja: Puss In Boots, dedicated to DreamWorks' animated film Puss In Boots , has been released on a variety of devices.

The free-to-play game port was released as a beta in April 2011, and Halfbrick described it as "60-second gameplay with lots of powerups , unlocks and achievements".

In April 2018, the developers announced Fruit Ninja Fight , their own multiplayer game, and published a demo version for it in the Google Play Store .

Web-based implementations

In March 2011, Halfbrick announced a Facebook port of the game called Fruit Ninja Frenzy . The Facebook version received several updates and was available from November 18, 2012 until the game went down on November 30, 2013.

Shortly before E3 2011, Fruit Ninja Kinect was released for the Xbox 360 in the Xbox LIVE Arcade (XBLA) Marketplace on August 10, 2011, using Kinect for motion control. It was the first XBLA game to use the motion-sensing Kinect controller. In order to promote the Xbox 360 game, a was voucher - token for Fruit Ninja Kinect included in the sales package of The Gunstringer, a separate Kinect title from Twisted Pixel Games has been developed.

Fruit Ninja Kinect received its first additional downloadable content ( DLC ) on August 24, 2011, and received additional DLC content later. In 2012, Fruit Ninja Kinect won Casual Game of the Year from the 15 annual Interactive Achievement Awards and was ranked in the top 10 best-selling XBLA games of all time. On March 18, 2015, Fruit Ninja Kinect 2 was released by Halfbrick for the Xbox One . In addition to the content of the original Kinect game, the FNK2 version offers new game features such as Ninja Dodge, Strawberry Strike, Bamboo Strike and Apple Range. In party and battle modes, up to four players can team up in multiplayer combat.

Virtual reality

On July 7, 2016, Fruit Ninja VR was released for the HTC Vive in Steam's Early Access program . A version for PlayStation VR was also released on December 20, 2016 . A version for the Oculus Rift was also released earlier . Fruit Ninja VR was one of the first games available when the Oculus Quest standalone VR headset was released on May 21, 2019 . The game was received largely positively by the community and critics. The game achieved a score of 75 out of 100 (based on 12 ratings) on Metacritic and 87 out of 100 points (based on 5 ratings) on GameRankings . The game was in numerous chart and download lists for mobile apps .

Mostly the simple, fun and amusing gameplay with funny graphics and fast controls is praised, which is addictive and uses the technologies of touchscreen and motion control innovatively. In addition, the game is well suited as a casual game , as it can be used on a mobile basis to bridge boredom and waiting times.

Furthermore, the support and the many updates of Halfbrick, the online multiplayer, the many achievements and leaderboards, which strongly influenced the success of the game, are praised. Some critics found the game's difficulty level to be inconsistent. In addition to the addiction factor, the reason for financial success is the low acquisition costs.

However, the rating system and the difficulty of the game were rated mixed. For example, Chris Reed from Slide to Play thought there should be an option to increase the game's difficulty curve. App Spy's Andrew Nesvadba found, among other things, that the ability to beat a high score became more difficult because the bonus items were random. James Pikover from GameZone , Geoff Gibson from DIYGamer and Levi Buchanan from IGN praised the game's ability to share the scores via Facebook and Twitter .

Sales figures

The iOS version of Fruit Ninja sold over 200,000 times in the first month and over a million times after three months. In September 2010 there were already over 2 million units sold and in December 2012 over four million. In May 2012, the app reached over 300 million downloads and was installed on a third of all US iPhones. In 2015, the app was downloaded over a billion times. The Xbox Live Arcade version sold over 739,000 times in the first calendar year.

Adaptations and influence on pop culture

A real- life version of the app is being produced by Halfbrick Studios as a family film in collaboration with Tripp Vinson and Vinson Films . JP Lavin and Chad Damiani are writing the script for the film with New Line Cinema .

It also aired an exclusive YouTube Red series entitled Fruit Ninja: Frenzy Force . The CGI animated series produced by Halfbrick Studios follows the adventures of Seb, Niya, Peng and Ralph, who are trained to become the fruit ninja who must fight old Durian Gray and his monsters.

2018 appeared Tabletop - Board Game Combo Party: Fruit Ninja , that of Lucky Duck Games is sold. Before that, money was raised on Kickstarter . There are numerous videos on YouTube , such as parodies , animations or real-life versions of the game.

In addition, several books, such as an art book , guides or a comic , appeared on the game.
