criticism

Data transfers to China

Because of the collection and automatic transmission of personal data to Chinese servers, the company has repeatedly been criticized. In 2014 it became known that smartphones of the Redmi Note series send data such as photos, SMS and e-mails as long as they are connected via WiFi. The user was not informed about this and was unable to decide whether or not to agree to it, or to deactivate communication between certain servers. Even rooting or installing an alternative firmware did not prevent the transfer; it was anchored very deeply in the system by the manufacturer, close to the driver level.

Xiaomi confirmed the data transfers and announced an update that in future will give the user the choice of whether to use the cloud messaging system. The update was released in August 2014.

In 2020, extensive data transfers from Xiaomi smartphones to Alibaba servers rented by Xiaomi in Russia and Singapore became known, including every website visited with the browser of the operating system, every search query (regardless of which search engine, even in incognito mode of the browser), the Folder opened by the user, the screens viewed, the settings and IDs made . Xiaomi confirmed to collect extensive data about the smartphone and its users.

License violations

Since Xiaomi did not provide any source code for the Linux kernel used in the products , the manufacturer violated the license agreement ( GPL ). A petition called for the source code for the kernel and some parts of the MIUI firmware to be released. In September 2013, Xiaomi announced the release of the kernel source code for its Mi smartphones. This was implemented in March 2015.

environmental pollution

In the sustainability report published by Greenpeace in 2017 on the subject of smartphones, laptops and tablets, Xiaomi received the worst rating (F), which consists of the environmental friendliness of the electricity used (F), the reusability of the materials (and whether they have already been recycled ) (F), the use of hazardous chemicals (F) and the reparability together.
