MIUI (from MI User Interface, pronounced like "Me You I") is a heavily adapted, Android- based operating system from Xiaomi .
The operating system is continuously being developed. MIUI is translated into other languages by independent developers and ported accordingly into unofficial versions. Except for the Mi A series, all smartphones sold by Xiaomi have MIUI preinstalled as the operating system . Most recently, MIUI 12 was presented.

history

The first version was based on Android 2.2x Froyo and was released in Chinese on August 16, 2010. At first only for a few devices and shortly afterwards for a few other Android devices, this custom ROM quickly spread, from which a large community developed. On August 16, 2011, Xiaomi's first smartphone appeared, the Mi 1. With more and more smartphones from its own production, Xiaomi gradually stopped developing this mobile operating system for other smartphones. In the beginning, MIUI was often criticized because it was very similar to iOS and Samsung's TouchWiz . After a few months, MIUI had over a million users. Since MIUI 4, which was based on Android Icecream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, Xiaomi has integrated its own antivirus engine. This was developed by tech partner Tencent (where Lei Jun was previously CEO). Methods were quickly published in the Chinese Mi forum to remove this, as it was not considered useful by most of the users. On May 10, 2016, Xiaomi announced that the MIUI ROM has over 200 million users worldwide and supports over 340 devices.

MIUI and Google Play services

Due to government regulations that Google does not comply with in China, the Chinese government is blocking access to Google services. In MIUI 4, Xiaomi started removing Google services from the system. However, Xiaomi has expanded its operating system outside of China, so MIUI versions for Xiaomi devices outside of China (e.g. in Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia) have Google Play services and Google apps such as Google Mail and Google Maps pre-installed. However, in order to make profits in China in this area, Xiaomi has launched its own services, such as its own cloud service; MiPay to be able to pay for the themes and games. With the further development of MIUI 5, almost all Google services were then removed from the Chinese MIUI ROM version. MIUI Global versions outside of China are certified by Google.

License violations

Since Xiaomi did not want to provide source codes for the Linux kernel used in the products , the manufacturer violated the license agreement ( GPL ). A petition called for the source code for the kernel and some parts of the MIUI firmware to be released. According to an announcement in September 2013, Xiaomi wanted to publish the source code of the kernel of its Mi smartphones. This was implemented in March 2015.
