With Android One is one of Google -developed technical standard for hardware and software of mobile phones. An Android One smartphone offers two years of guaranteed access to Android operating system updates (“Upgrades”) and regular updates for three years.
Android One comprises a number of smartphones from different manufacturers on which a certain Android launcher and, in addition to the apps from Google, no or only a few apps from the respective hardware manufacturer are installed. The aim of the project is a consistent user interface (GUI) and thus a consistent user experience across different devices. The certification relates exclusively to the graphical user interface of the operating system. System components can still be adapted by the respective manufacturer. The Generic System Image (GSI) is not installed on the devices.
Colloquially, the software running on Android One devices is also referred to as “pure Android”, “Stock Android” and “Vanilla Android”, but this implies that no changes have been made and is therefore factually incorrect.
The standard does not define the point at which the certified devices must receive the update / upgrade. The manufacturers deliver updates in different countries at different times. In principle, with Android One, Google would like to counter the criticism that the continuous supply of Android smartphones with operating system updates is poor for many devices and manufacturers. The manufacturer Samsung announced on August 5, 2020 that three Android operating system updates should be made available for some model series.
Android One was launched in 2014 and initially focused on entry-level devices for emerging markets, but later evolved into Google's premier program for mobile devices. It has been described by Google as a continuation of the Nexus program. The similar Google Play Edition devices program existed from spring 2013 to early 2015, offering five smartphones and a tablet with the standard Android interface.
As an alternative to Android One, the Android Enterprise Recommended program and a. Resilient devices are provided with updates for five years. In February 2020, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) took up the update period as a central requirement with a catalog of requirements for the basic equipment of smartphones from an IT security perspective and called for updates to be supplied for five years.
