Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (born November 20, 1957 in Otuoke , Nigeria ) is a Nigerian politician and was the President of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015 . From 2005 to 2007 he was governor of the Nigerian state of Bayelsa , and from 2007 he was Vice President of Nigeria.

Life

Jonathan, who comes from the Christian Niger Delta , is himself a Christian and belongs to the Ijaw ethnic group, began his education at St. Stephen Primary School in Otuoke and at St. Michael Primary School in Oloibiri , and from 1971 he attended Mater Dei High School in Imiringi . From 1975 to 1977 he was an official at the customs and tax authorities. In 1977 he enrolled as a student at the Institute of Zoology at the newly founded University of Port Harcourt . After graduating in 1981, he became a teacher at the Community Secondary School in Iresi . After various academic activities, Goodluck Jonathan became deputy director of the no longer existing Commission for the Development of Oil Production Regions (OMPADEC) in 1993.

politics

As a member of the People's Democratic Party , Goodluck Jonathan was elected Lieutenant Governor of Bayelsa State in 1999. When Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was dismissed in December 2005 on charges of corruption, Goodluck Jonathan succeeded him. In the meantime, however, the Commission for Economic and Financial Crime (EFCC) is also investigating his own wife, Patience Faka Jonathan.

In December 2006, Umaru Yar'Adua was elected candidate for the April 2007 presidential election by delegates from the PDP. In consultation with the party leadership, he appointed Goodluck Jonathan as his running mate . The two PDP candidates represented both the Muslim north and, through Goodluck Jonathan, the Christian Niger Delta . On April 23, 2007, the Nigerian Election Commission declared the pair of candidates to be the winners of the election with 70% of the vote. Jonathan took office on May 29, 2007.

On April 20, 2007, according to the AFP news agency, an attack was committed on Goodluck Jonathan while he was in a hotel in the city of Yenagoa in the southern state of Bayelsa. The politician was not injured.

After a power vacuum of over two months due to a serious illness of Umaru Yar'Adua, the Nigerian parliament appointed Goodluck Jonathan on February 9, 2010 as the "incumbent president", who is responsible for the temporary management of official business. On March 17th, he dissolved the government.

Shortly after President Yar'Adua's death, Jonathan was sworn in as Nigeria's new President.

On June 30, 2010, Jonathan withdrew the Nigerian national soccer team from all international tournaments for two years due to the qualifying round at the 2010 soccer World Cup and dissolved the NFF so that a new team could be built up. However, this contradicts the statutes of the world association FIFA , which prohibit any state interference in the affairs of the national associations. Therefore, a few days later, FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot gave the President an ultimatum until July 5, 2010 to withdraw the decision. If this does not happen, Nigeria would be suspended from the world federation. Shortly before the ultimatum expired, Jonathan reversed the decision so that Nigeria could remain a member of FIFA.

Goodluck Jonathan won the 2011 presidential election in April . Despite unrest with hundreds dead, observers rated the election as the fairest in more than ten years. On May 29, 2011, he was sworn in as Nigerian President for the second time within a year.

In 2013, his government tightened the criminalization of homosexual acts and is supported in this by the Catholic Nigerian Bishops' Conference.

In the 2015 presidential election, Jonathan was defeated by his challenger and former President Muhammadu Buhari .
