Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari (born February 25, 1925 - † December 28, 2018 ) was President of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983 .

Shagari made a political career in the First Republic after training as a high school teacher. From 1954 to 1958 he was a member of parliament in the House of Representatives, then from 1958 to 1959 Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa . Until the end of the First Republic in 1966 and in the subsequent military governments, he held various ministerial posts.

He was a member of the 1977–78 constituent assembly. Shagari was a co-founder of the National Party of Nigeria and a candidate for the presidency. In 1979 he was elected President of the Second Republic . In December 1983, however, he was overthrown by General Muhammadu Buhari's military coup. 1984–1986 he was under house arrest, after which he largely withdrew from politics. With the beginning of the 4th Republic he returned as an "elder statesman" in an advisory capacity. One of his sons became a minister in the cabinet of President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was elected in 1999 .
