Yenagoa is the capital of the Nigerian state Bayelsa and is located in the Niger Delta in the south of Nigeria. It has an estimated population of around 320,000 in 2015.

The majority of the city's population are the Ijaw , an ethnic group of the Niger Delta. In addition to English, Izon is therefore also an important lingua franca . The 5,000- seat Yenagoa Township Stadium is home to a top division football club.

Yenagoa and its surroundings form one of the eight Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Bayelsa with an area of ​​706.18 km². In the penultimate census in 1991, the LGA had 70,399 inhabitants and thus a population density of 100 inhabitants per km².

Nigeria has big plans for the city: a planned expansion to 650,000 residents who will live and work in an area of ​​154 square kilometers. The master plan (2006/2007) comes from the planning office Albert Speer & Partner, Frankfurt a. M.
