Alphen rampage

The Alphen rampage took place on April 9, 2011 in Alphen aan den Rijn , about 32 kilometers south of Amsterdam . A man killed six and injured 17 people, including two children (six and ten years old) before suicide committed.

Course of events and consequences

The 24-year-old Tristan van der Vlis entered the Ridderhof shopping center in Alphen around noon in military clothing. After a short while he fired into the crowd. He used a semi-automatic small caliber - rifle . Panic has been reported. After completing the crime, he committed suicide.

Three women and three men aged 80, 49 and 42 as well as 91, 68 and 45 years and two other people were killed in the rampage .

The shopping center was cleared and the area cordoned off because bomb threats were found after an investigation into the perpetrator's car and to reduce the risk of copycats. The motive of the gunman is still unclear.

Queen Beatrix and Prime Minister Mark Rutte expressed their condolences to the victims and their families. She was "speechless in the face of the enormous suffering that has been inflicted on so many people," said a court spokesman.

The culprit

Tristan van der Vlis lived in an apartment with his father since childhood. He was a member of the rifle club and owned three weapons. Before his act he had mental health problems , in 2006 he tried to take his own life.
