description

Vegetative characteristics

Hoya pubicalyx forms bald, twisting or climbing shoot axes. The diameter of the more or less round, pale shoot axes is about 3 mm.

The opposite leaves are divided into short, thick petioles and simple leaf blades. The fleshy to leathery leaf blades are about 10 to 14 cm long and about 3 to 5 cm wide, oval or oblong-oval with a broadly rounded base and a pointed end. The leaf margins are slightly bent back, the top and bottom of the leaf are shiny and more or less wavy.

Generative characteristics

The many-flowered (up to about 30), golden inflorescence is hemispherical to spherical with a diameter of about 8 to 9 cm. The flower stalks are up to 3.5 cm long and slightly hairy.

The flowers are fragrant; it is particularly noticeable in the evening. The sepals are elongated-oval with a length of about 4 mm or lanceolate with slightly hairy outside. The bald, fleshy-looking corolla measures approx. 1.8 cm in diameter. The flower color varies from almost black-red to light pink, or strong rose to deep pink. The flower color can also be slightly different within one inflorescence. The crown lobes are broadly triangular, about 6 mm long and bluntly tapering. They are flat, only the apex is slightly curved outwards; the edges bent back. The inside is densely covered with fine white papillae, the outside is bare. The star-shaped secondary crown has a diameter of 10 to 12 mm. The leathery corolla lobes with a smooth, shiny surface are elongated and elongated-oval or lanceolate with a pointed end with a length of about 5 mm. Their base is usually dark in color and becomes lighter or even white towards the tip.

Occurrence and systematics

The type specimen was collected on January 24, 1913 by M. Ramos and GE Edaño on trees along a river in a very humid environment near Mauban in the "Tayabas Province" ( Quezon Province ) on the island of Luzon. Elmer Drew Merrill first described Hoya pubicalyx in the Philippine Journal of Science , Volume 13, p. 331 in 1918.

Cultivars

Hoya pubicalyx has been cultivated for many years and there are already numerous cultivars and seedling selections, possibly also hybrids with Hoya carnosa .
